Re: [MTC Global] Modularization of Education

i studied abroad.till 9th and  i was educated in a british system of education. After 9th there was a two year O-level which was actually 10th and 11th.

I have seen modular system. In 6th class, in the subject of english we followed it. I dont understand why, because it wasnt done in any other subject. I am talking of 1988.

I remember it clearly because it was odd and really didnt make sense except that the good students kept competing with one another and the rest just plodded on at a pathetic pace.

there were 13 levels and each level had 6 books to be covered. So level 1 for instance had 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5 1.6..  similarly lets say level 6 had 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, 6.4, 6.5, 6.6  ...and so on

The difficulty of the text and questions increased as one progressed from level 1 to level 13. To emphasize the difficulty the density of the text increased and the size of font decreased....so while level 1 was written in lets say font 18....level 6 would be font 12 and level 13   in font size 10.

we competed with one another on who did more.I competed too against a german girl...for the rest it seemed like they were there just to enjoy the stupid race....between the two of us.

.we had a trimester system...after the first trimester..other subjects suffered..especially maths which was dear to me...I gave up the chase..

it was nonsense..after the end of second trimester we were asked to give our opinion....no matter how grand it was...i remember i and my german counterpart..didnt feel we learned anything ..except answering questions well..

we gave our observation that we wanted to have better skills in communication tools like report writing, letters, proposals.

In addition we wanted to learn and have an opportunity for  imaginative writing in both prose and poetry.

So communication tools were added in 7th and a new school magazine was started were we could present our writings.

In addition to that one novel was added from 7th onwards and we were expected to submit summarized sequel in 5000 words of the novel at the end of third trimester.

I think modular teaching was only being experimented at that stage in 1988.

thanks and regards

Modularization of education is a good concept and it has been successfully used
in many countries. Before I proceed further let me submit as:
1.
Can ATKT or Carry over be treated as a sort of modularization? I remember
during 70s, if one opts for exemption, the class awarded is pass class, not even
third class. Only those whe clear papers in one sitting were eligible to Class.
This has got its own limitations and benefits. What I experienced that those who
clear all papers in one sitting possess better intellectual capacity and hard
work.
2.
Modules are building blocks and therefore are inter-related and integrated. Our
system needs to be so designed that this takes care.
3.
Modules means a specific time frame and human inputs. Unless we do not have a
robust mechanism in place, modules will give no better output.
4.
Curriculum design and development needs different skills and philosophy of
teaching-learning process.

One certainly can adapt modules but must wary of pitfalls.

>Hi All,

Almost 12 years ago, I did some analysis on our education system and its
"incompatibility" to the nature of human life System.

Of course I found several other disorders. I will give you first one with
expectation of some effort to correct it.

One of the primary focus point was "Time".

The present pattern of Schedules of courses and exams are so Rigid that it is
not flexible and do not support the uncertainties of human life.

If a person could not be able to make the exam due to any reason, he/she has to
loose opportunity and waste time as well for another turn.

How to modularize the present education system that doesn't waste Time in the
present structure?

I believe this question must be addressed by every body in Teaching Field right
away.

What is your opinion?
