RE: [MTC Global] RE: India a view point

If reservation means compromise with quality/competency, even if it is for a defined period, it is damaging the nation for ever.

It is said that poverty breeds poverty and richness begets richness. Therefore, my view on this debate is that any reservation policy or welfare scheme per se is not bad, so long as it is effectively targeted to the really needy and weaker sections of the society and becomes an engine of social change over time, but there has to be a sun-set clause so that it does perpetuate itself and degenerate just to reap the benefits.

Our Constitution may be suitable for countries where there is one religion, one language, cultural traditions etc. Our Constitution is basically 1935 Act devised by the British, marginally modified by some inputs from Australian, Irish, etc Constitutions.  It has little to do with large mix of Indian population.

There  are a large number amendments and there many are many in pipeline. In addition there are a number of clauses which have not been or cannot be  implemented for various reasons.

India is a large country with each region having varying degree of development. Fact that there is no proper and balanced  development either of human resources or  economical development indicates serious lacuna in our Constitution. Large portion of blame must rest with the politicians; but these politicians are product of the system.

Hence whatever line of thought we may have we cannot help finding problem with our Constitution.

Dear Shri Goel,

of course: if there are equal opportunities in reality, no reservation and/or other artificial humbug is needed! Only, the decision makers at all levels don't want this, and this the crux of all the failed (pseudo) "welfare" schemes and whatnot. Eyewash, in my opinion.

Reservation is but a band-aid for a deep wound where band-aid won't help at all, but is the reason for the wound to fester further! We all seem to have got used to it, and "political correctness" is the most evil mantra to protect the existing inequality. By the way: supported by all political parties in their greed for power and money.

Dear Shri Goel,

reservation/quota systems are always adverse to sound, meritorious development. That is why it cannot be substituted by any other type of reservation system, it can only be abolished. Equal opportunities to all, that is what is needed and for this, Indian society has to mature in a strong civil society without superstitions and the like. Alas, our educational institutions purport superstitions and all concepts/ideologies/religions related to these. We have to fight exactly on this front, not compromising on more 'convenient' issues. Committed, enlightened teachers could be at the forefront - but: where are they???

In my opinion we do need reservation system but of different nature. We need institutions where free education will be provided to have-nots and drown trodden societies to make them competitive to earn their place based on their merits. Efforts of Prof. Anand in Patna could emulated by the Government. A small effort in this direction was made through Navoday Vidyalaya which gave excellent results for first few years and then same corruption entered into these institutions also and today they have remained only for name sake. RtE is a step in right direction on paper but its implementation is so lousy that soon it will lose its relevant. Ensure that facility is given only to those who are willing to invest time and effort and ensure that schools are reimbursed all the cost (not only tuition fees) and we can have good results. But today the state of affairs is that admissions are made on the paper but majority of the students do not attend the schools because then can not afford other costs of uniforms, books, transport, food etc.

Dear N. Chandrsekhar,

I am glad to have found someone like-minded - I get a lot of flak from various sides, but obviously, all have th!eir own (not-so hideable!) agendas. Especially political outfits: they need the reservation system as it is an easy tool fro them to play the votebank card.

Let reason and a humane mindset prevail!

Dear Satish,

there's nothing wrong with our Constitution! The problem is that our (political and other) decision makers violate it continuously, and that the reservation system is adverse to any sustainable development. These have to be tackled!

I maintain we need to urgently look at our Constitution if we want to make headway

Sir,

It is agreed that we are in a bad shape. But we must remember that India was an extremely rich and progressive country. It implies that we have in us everything to make us a great power. All it now needs is to look inwards and find the solution.
