Re: Re: [MTC Global] Weekend Debate-MOOCs vs Classroom Education

Dear Sir, The debate on the MOOC vs Classroom is taking an interesting turn.
Fundamentally, I feel that the model of learning has to shift the responsibility
from the teacher to the student. This change will mean that only those motivated
to learn would attend the classroom. The emphasis is on self learning rather than
spoon feeding the pupils. There is no need to pressurize students to attend the
classroom session. Also, flexibility in a student to complete the course would be
entailed automatically. This model closely resembles the Distance Mode education
model. Already, Universities such as the SMU, IGNOU, YCMOU, have a lot of content
provided to the student.
MOOC, as one of the writers has commented, is a substitution of the library. A
person motivated to learn will join a MOOC and the same time join a regular
college class room. The teacher can also be a spectator in the MOOC along with his
pupils in order to enable the students to complete the tasks. The teacher may give
the student work to do and assess the work. Those falling behind will have to exit
one class room and automatically join the following classroom at some point in the
year based on successfully completing the tasks and the final exam.
Clearly, this means that the teacher will have to give up all class room lecturing
and only instruct students on the work and how it should be done. The student will
have to study the appropriate content and apply it to his work.
The classroom will assess the student and grade the same.

>Dear MTCians,The week end debate on MOOS vs CLASS ROOM Education is an
interesting topic which needs deeper introspection and through analysis.
First of all MOOS is an acronym for Matter Of Optional Studies OR   for Multi-user
Object Oriented Studies. It can also be spelt as Mass Online Oriented
Studies.  It is however, totally different from Class room Education. MOOS is
nothing but Distance Education but with a mouse on hand.
In the Moos Model Student can view the Coach on the screen but the coach cannot
see the viewer/ student. Both can hear each other. But the Coach cannot evaluate
the listening ability or the understanding capacity of the student since he does
not have eye to eye  contact.   Out of sight is out of mind.It is only the
student's capacity to follow the instructions and execute the assignments that
matters but how far its precision is the matter in question. The Moos model
education may relieve the institutions from faculty engagement/ labs/ Project
reviews etc., But what is the control point?

In the Class room education model the teacher takes the role of a THUMB. The thumb
can reach all the other four fingers comfortably and make a FIST. Likewise the
teacher will guide and control the activities of the students face to face.He can
identify the Good, average and bad material and give them the required elixir for
improvement which is not possible in the  Distance education model or the MOOS.
How far the qualifications obtained through MOOS  are recognised by the
prospective employers is a big question.

The MOOS model is time saving, faculty saving, investment saving, but will it save
the prospects of the Nation where Technology and Engineering counts very high.
Through the MOOS model can one become a brilliant technocrat or a Scientist or an
Astronomer- it has to be seen.  No doubt we have to be a Roman while you are in
Rome- So to say that we have to accept the changes on method of learning and
education and try to switch over from the prevailing pattern of teaching and
education.

If one has to take the challenges and accept the changes,  does  the Government
adopt to the changing environment and the political systems? We are sticking to
the same old pattern of political administration and the big leaders leading the
roothes. We have to accept the changes, of course and adapt the same. Will they
really yield the desired results is a million dollar question. It is the same case
with MOOS or Class Room Model Education.

Dear All,

MOOC is a great ICT tool and it is going to stay here.

MOOC means 80% preparation by students using surfing and 20% interaction in class!
This has

also introduced Flipped Classroom concept and Germany has adopted blending
approach 5 decades

ago: blending of e-learning and face-to-face approach.

Hopefully MOOC will lead to free education on line, a type of CSR.

MOOC will cause downsizing of faculty, capacity to handle a large number of
students at a time

with quality education at affordable cost, but demanding more dynamic, versatile,
committed,

dedicated, multi-skilled core faculty.

Regards.

Yours,

if not

covered sofar, for the weekend debate.Whether MOOCS will replace Classroom

that MOOCS are only a replacement for books and real learning takes place in the
context of

in-person interaction/debate etc. However a blended learning would be the desired
one (ideal

choice)with Technology widening and deepening the class room learning. With best
