Re: [cameroon_politics] STATESMEN OF REUNIFICATION RE-UNITED IN MAMFE(1963)

My Pa Fru Ndeh,
I think you are simply fascinated by the pics. All I can say is that these statesmen did not meet in Mamfe to acclaim LRC's annexation of Southern Cameroons. The Chief of Besongabang could not acclaim the annexation and attendant militarization of his territory. This annexation was followed by raids (calee-calee), public beating of men in front of their wives and children, raping of women and confiscation of people's belongings under the pretext of demanding receipts for radio sets, etc. The military base at Besongabang was established for that purpose-humiliating the annexed people of Southern Cameroons. In the vocabulary of the annexationistsa "civilizing Anglophones". Else, why was a military base planted in Mamfe, far removed from the sight of fleeing "maquisards"? This practice has continued till today-humiliating a Manyu Chief in public to taunt the power of annexationists.

I was led to understand the value of my anger and my desire to speak out, through these words from Mary Catherine Hilkert, a Dominican theologian. She wrote in Speaking with Authority: Catherine of Siena and the Voices of Women Today:
"Sometimes the words of protest are the only words we can speak clearly in the face of complex forces of evil woven into the fabric of our lives and world. We cannot always see or name the way forward. Further, no liberation front or political or social program can be identified with the reign of God. But even the cry of protest is a word of grace that moves us to resistance and to searching for another way. The beginning of finding a new path is speaking the truth of what clearly is not God's will for human life …."

1963.
Mamfe Town. My grandfather, Mfor Tambe-Ayuk Mbechang of
Besongabang
(second from left) poses with his KNDP political ally,
Prime Minister
John Ngu Foncha, of West Cameroon and Manyu SDO Mr. Thomas
M. Ndoko.

Five months after the
Plebiscite of 1961 Amadou Ahidjo, at the behest of J.N
Foncha, decorated Mfor Tambe-Ayuk Mbechang for meritorious
services towards the Reunification of Cameroon.  My
grandfather was the first traditional leader to be decorated
for Plebiscite services.  As a scion of this great
Manyu ruler, I cannot put asunder what he believed in and
fought for.  I would be betray his sacred trust if I
did not fight to preserve The Republic of Cameroon.
