Re: [cameroon_politics] Fw: [MINCAM] RE: A primary school in Western Nigeria 1952.

Greg,
I can now see the background from which Chief Obafemi Awolowo on becoming the Premier of the Western Region after the independence of Nigeria on October 1, 1960, made free education for all the cornerstone of his government policies.  The result of his visionary leadership in that area guaranteed an enviable position for the Yoruba in Nigeria among the most educated, enterprising and competitive in Africa. On my way to Lagos driving from Cameroon with a friend the late Fritz Makoge, we had a breakdown at Shagamo on the Lagos/Ibadan/ Benin Express Highway and spent time getting our care repaired. A senior police sergeant at the Shagano Police Station opted to take us to a college belonging to the legendary Tai Solarin.  To compare it to what passes for most government secondary schools in my own Bangwaland is like comparing day and night.  Thanks to the hardworking spirit  and the sacrifices of my Bangwa people at home and abroad, we are continuously building classes for our children and paying PTA teachers to teach them. The politicization of education and the debasing of standards to attain political objectives have made a mockery of education in the Republic of Cameroon.  The  appointment of CPDM party militants to head party motivated and ideologically slanted Universities, colleges and primary schools  is among the most serious crimes for which this regime of personal power must held be accountable.  Parents and people of good will must evince every effort to fight against this crime before its perverse impact destroys the youth and with it the future.
Chief C.Taku
