RE: [MTC Global] What makes a Good Management Faculty ?

In my personal estimation, the word teaching is really irrelevant. The correct word is learning. Learning not just for the duration of class period but for the long term. We should be discussing quality and quantity of learning instead of quality of teaching. Of course these are correlated, but all the attributes that are normally ascribed to a good teacher -deep and thorough subject knowledge,  powerful presentation/delivery skills, and professionalism in all interactions with students - may come to nought if they do not result in learning that equips students to handle real world problem.

Many from this erudite audience may say this is distinction without difference. i would emphatically disagree.

In order to be a good teacher one must be able to create an aura of learning... no matter what it takes ...  and then deliver learning. In most cases this aura is created through instilling a fear of bad grade. That is how the system works. But, in those cases, it is my considered view that students learn precious little that will stick with them as they face real life issues in jobs or otherwise in their later lives. A true aura of learning is created by establishing in students' minds the "value" of the material being delivered. When the students feel that the skills and expertise they are about to acquire will keep them in great shape in their jobs, they get motivated to learn and they become self-driven to work hard to learn the materials. So, in a simplistic way, good teachers are those who can create good motivation for learning based on the values/skills/expertise they bring to class.

Let me elaborate through a concocted example. Being a business teacher, my example and comments will relate to business scenario only. I have a bud who teaches Operations Research/Management Science. His understanding of the subject material is great, he explains the steps of all the algorithms well and his students typically get 90% average in each of the three tests. He is impeccably professional (returns graded material in next class, returns all calls e-mails, takes time to help struggling students). Students like him and he has fairly good evaluations. For me, he is NOT a good teacher although I am not fatuous enough to say it to him. The learning of few tools without knowing when and where to apply and connect with current business issues (e.g., competing on Triple Bottom Line, etc.). His work - even if understood completely - will at best help minimize cost. But today's competition is not on minimizing cost and therefore price); it is on improving product value and making more profit by charging customers a higher price. He is considered a good teacher both by the university and students because the metric is basically flawed. He is considered a good teacher because students believe that they understood the complex material that he taught. But is that the goal? Really? in my view, the goal should be to learn those tools and techniques that will improve the competitiveness of the companies.

This is an example, but I hope you get the gist of what I am trying to say...  In today's business, keeping pace with changing customer preferences and developing dynamic production systems that can rapidly adapt to the changing customer needs are more of the type of learning that is needed: that is flexibility, innovation, and technologies... But it is not easy to teach these things in a way that commensurate learning occurs.

With warm regards,

Ashok

Subject: [MTC Global] What makes a Good Management Faculty ?

To me , there are two types of Management Faculty - 1) Good Faculty 2) Bad Faculty. I don't believe in discrimination of Management Faculties on the base of Gender and Age. Good Management Faculties displays the characteristics of what is mentioned in Sanskrit word "GURU" where "Gu" means ignorance/darkness and "Ru" means one who drives out ignorance/darkness and brings knowledge/light. To the extent one destroy the ignorance/darkness from the mind of people on the science and art of management , one becomes a good faculty.

Any more ideas ?
