Re: [MTC Global] Here's Why Students Fall Asleep During Lectures

What I think there are basically two reasons which contributes towards sleep behavior-

Biological and Psychological

Biological relates to natural body mechanisms e.g. type of meals and there contents, digestion process, body metabolism etc.
psychological relates to factors such as attitude towards subject, topic or instructor, interest towards subject, learning system of the class, mode, level of cognition involved etc.

Dear all esteemed colleagues,
The issue raised is very old and the manner in which it is presented,really creates interest in readers.I feel happy to see the classifications of types of students in syndromes and types.Every teacher can divide his students in types. It is always case specific.It changes from place to place,from class to class and also from teacher to teacher.It is not the students who are responsible for sleeping,rather, it is the education system including ( teachers,institutions,courses, personal and social biases) which make this happen.
Thanks and regards to all.

DrPratap Reddy Sir is absolutely cirrect.
It's not that these problems didn't exist before but the then teachers resolved them using their own methods like stories, anecdotes etc.
It is for the teacher to come out, be it a joke, story or anecdote or a small case let, with his own methodology to make his lectures as interesting as he could.
Of course there could be some black sheep in every class and nothing could be done to arouse interest in them as many of them seem to suffer from onr of the two syndromes:
I know everything (IKE)
I don't wish to know anything (IDWAT).
Best wishes

Apart from what's said in this post,you can bring in stories,anecdotes,humour,caselets,GD,"encourage students ask Qs /critique/comment/compare/relate/play games/allow physical exercises/meditation",play videos,give some numericals etc etc.

This post is generous in saying that you can hold the attention of students for 10 Mts at a stretch-but according to John F.Kennedy,an epochal orator world has ever seen ,you can't hold it for more than 120 seconds at a time!!!

NOTE:With all said & done,there are (BAT* like)students who being already spoilt,try to disturb.You either segregate or evict them from the class

*Students are of 4 types:
PARROT...get by heart & vomit without understanding;
COFFEE FILTER...retain trash,leave the essence;
BAT...fly around collecting dust,dip into clean waters(enter the class room-otherwise quiet,disturb it rendering it chaotic(dirty waters) and drink it;
HAMSA...vivisect vital few(pure milk) from trivial many(water)and drink the pure milk/receive the essence of what's being taught.

Here's Why Students Fall Asleep During Lectures

John Medina, in his book Brain Rules, introduces data that forms the following graph:
The data shows that student attention level takes a dive, approximately 10 minutes into a lesson. This is a natural occurrence (and I believe the reason YouTube videos were initially limited to <9 minutes), but can be dealt with by a good instructor. The problem is most instructors (particularly at the university level) know next to nothing about the learning process and instructional theory. A good instructor will introduce variation into a lesson every 10 minutes to regain the students' attention (as depicted in the below graph).

This variation can be accomplished in many ways - from inserting a student activity to asking questions or otherwise soliciting involvement from the students to changing the delivery style or mechanism.

The problem is that so many instructors see instructing as a one-way communication. If a student is not contributing to the communication, they lose focus and many literally go to sleep.

There are other triggers for sleeping during lessons, such as eating a large meal immediately before the lesson, poor ventilation in the classroom, and tired students.
