Dear Sir, Is manufacturing a product such as say; a cigarette, ethical? The
businessman would say it is ethical because he is merely making a product for the
market that wants it, he even informs the consumer appropriately and then leaves
it to the consumer to buy it. We accept this argument. However, a manufacturer
making, say; heroin, would be declared as not only unethical but even illegal. The
medical fraternity has declared that there is not a single benefit of cigarette
smoking or a heroin consuming apart from giving a temporary lightness of feeling.
Over time both develop into pernicious habits. What if there were to be a well
known company making this product and following all legal statutes. Would it be
ethical just because the market exists? Some people justify that the state earns
precious revenue from duties and levies what about the cost of bearing a diseased
and weak population even though they may be paying consumers? For a very long time
Marijuana or weed was considered a psychotropic substance, now the USA is
considering cultivation of the weed as alright.
Who decides such issues?
The commonly held belief of Businesses is that between profits and ethics; profits
rather than ethics is important. This view is still prevalent.

Business and Ethics can coexist and can very well go together. The perception of
business is changing over time.Schumpeter, the great economist, justified profit
making by business as reward for taking risk. Some time back KumaraMangalamBirla,
made it clear that a "business is not expected to prosper in a society that
doesn';t.
Jim Collins and Porras Study has shown that the companies which survive are the
ones committed to certain values.Peter drunker, the father of Modern Management,
who in the beginning said that the purpose of the business is to make profit
,later was kind enough to assert that society interests should become the
interests of business and it should become the loadstar of business.
Gone are those days when business houses were merely thinking of making profit, by
hook or crook. But slowly realization is dawning that having taken so much it';s
time to give something back to the society and especially people. That';s how all
the talk about triple bottom line (profit, planet and people) had begun.
May be the numbers are not big right now who subscribe to the view about
coexistence of business and ethics but definitely more will join in the times to
come with people';s awareness about their rights/due share is increasing.
