Prof. Joydip is right.
Let me start with some queries:
What is freedom? Freedom from what? Is there any measurement to assess the extent of freedom? How far is it
reliable? Can no rules and regulations, no governance help promote freedom? Is it right to state that one's
freedom is capsuled under many social constraints?
History shows a very few in real sense have achieved (full) freedom in their thinking, behavior, deeds,
etc., totally fearless, dwelling in an environment that is beyond any favoritism, ism, rituals or dogma.Such
great souls either have to face fatal ends or are required to lead a very simple life hardly anyhow meeting
their bare worldly needs/necessities. Rest are constrained out of fear of their unpredictable future,
trapped by vices like greed, etc., curbing out the freedom of many others.
Otherwise why there are so many wars? Terrorism? Scams? Black money? Deteriorating quality of education?
Poverty? rapes? thefts? murders? and what not.
We are in the 21st Century, in the age of ITC, in the era of Knowledge Management, treating ourselves as
(ultra) modern generation. Now introspect: are we enjoying more freedom than our past generations, say, in
1000 AD,1500 AD, 1800 Ad and so on?

>You can only explain freedom to people who have tasted some extent of freedom in there thin real
senseoughts and life. How can you explain freedom, academic or other sort, who are bonded by there own
thoughts of religious feverism of "whats wrong" and complacency of "lets wait and watch" in all the previous
responses in this issue.
On 29-Nov-2014 6:25 PM, "Prabhakar Waghodekar"
delicate giving it a political color.
I felt very sorry to read such words as "very arbitrary"Â ,
"abrupt"Â , "too assertive", "The minister has no exposure of the
education
system. She has to depend on notes from bureaucrats, who have been
well-planted by the government in the ministry, and think tanks
comprising those from RSS and BJP. So how will she interact with
academicians if she does not know the issues? It is demoralising for
us", and "all appointments were being made bypassing
procedure", etc.
Let me make it clear that we Indians start exploiting situations as
per our convenience referring to the terms like "expression of
freedom", "expression of thoughts", "human rights", "academic
freedom", "caste-ism", etc.
(L) Vasant Rao Dada Patil, Ex-Chief Minster of Maharashtra was
almost an illiterate person but made revolutionary changes in the
higher professional education that nobody could achieve earlier or
even thought! Mostly all of our State or Central Ministers are
hardly educated/trained, unlike foreign countries, in the portfolio
they are handling. How many ministers/Officers can use guns/rifles?
Thus under the present Indian democratic conditions and culture,
these are more or less lame excuses simply designed to generate
hurdles in the path of others, can I term it as uncalled
interference?
Let the present Govt. elected by people function at least for 2-3
years enabling the public to judge their outcomes, we in fact do not
have a good data for comparison as the country is ruled by one party
for a long time. Is the Govt. making blunders? Who are responsible
for our present mess promoting scams, etc.?
Wait and watch. Have tolerance and patience. That is what a real
educated man will work with.

However , I feel we have now come into a Timezone , the education
segment needs to show its dissent in
aÃÆ'‚ collaborativeÃÆ'‚ and democratic
way and resist this excessive intervention of Government .
Academic freedom is an important criteria for creating future human
capital, for countries economic welfare in long term. It should not
be comprised by narrow political objectives.
We have to also realize as a community, that no freedom can be
achieved and sustained, without collective effort and peaceful
resistance towards entities who want to disrupt the freedom by force
, and it pretty well fits with the criteria of Academic freedom too.
