Re: [MTC Global] Odisha edu minister urges academics to design syllabus for students to compete at national level

I agree with the views expressed by Professor Ramesh Vemuganti.

The society in the evolution stage considers kids as national wealth and takes every care so that education outcomes are desireables.  Education as a whole is compartmentalized as primary to tertiary but they need to be in ladder style, no one stage can work in isolation, e.g., if primary education is of poor quality the whole building is weak.

National leaders, educationists, and all stake holders play a vital role in framing education. Teacher is just a single building bock. I remember when I was in 2 or 3rd std. my teacher used to gather  students at 5 am  moving from house to house and taking us to running, etc. Our teacher was self propelled. Both the society and teacher's can play a vital role in shaping the future of kids and in turn of a nation.

Unfortunately, this link is missing in India because of several reasons like cost based education.

Please see the attachments. We need Gurus. The first four folds of Yogas  can be interwoven  with primary and secondary education.

The Odisha Minister has been candid & assertive in stating the facts pertaining to higher education system. Why only Odisha? It is applicable to at least 20 states in India, barring the well developed states like Tamilnadu, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Kerala, partly AP,W Bengal, few others.
Firstly, he must understand that Higher education reforms come later. The changes are required in Schools & Inter colleges , where 80% of the personality is formed. .
3 things are most needed in our primary & secondary education system -

A) Future of a child is secure if he or she gets educated. Parents from rural areas need to understand the importance of education. They must not send a 10 year old to the fields instead of school. By denying a child of education, they are decimating his or her future. That is a major change required.

B) He also stressed on the participatory method of teaching wherein interaction between students and teachers is high - This will happen after the student is scaled up to a certain level. -- In our MBA/ PGDM classes, how many students participate ? They must have content to do that.

C). The Minister also asked teachers to upgrade their knowledge, reported ToI.
-- Teachers who do not update themselves will be rejected by the students. It is happening in Engg colleges, Management colleges, PG colleges, Universities, etc.

Dear Sir,

While adopting your 8 point guidelines, as Prof. Amiya Paricha has rightly cautioned regarding sensitive issues involved, the Model Syllabi suggested by AICTE for example can limit the creativity in finding a solution, unless we are guided by our passions.

  • What are we passionate about? Expressing our self? Creating something? Helping others? Let us find a Model Syllabi that will let you cultivate and share those passions with the world.
  • Passion is a powerful source of inspiration and motivation, and the most successful people tend to be the ones who are passionate about what they work on.

School of Management blends education with passion for competitive excellence among the students, so much so that recruiters find it easy to offer Rupees One Crore package these days, to the best ones.

We had an extensive discussion on the subject in the year 2011. Syllabus is generally structured and framed by Board of Studies and inputs are taken from the faculty [ for name sake in most of the cases]. BOS members also make travels abroad to get inputs from other universities but only for site-seeing trip.

Syllabus is a cut and paste theory or mix of 5 different syllabus followed in other universities. I also came to know sometimes syllabus is framed based on the books [and content] available.

The following points may be considered while framing the syllabus:

  1. The purpose of MBA Education keeping in view  developments in the society and National priorities.
  2. Futurology analysis of societal developments. Impact of ICT on Society.World emerging as Global Village and Society as Knowledge Society.
  3. Local Benchmarking - Select one of the best and bench mark with best universities / colleges.
  4. International Benchmarking.
  5. Do gap analysis wrt Corporate requirements.
  6. Now develop syllabus based on steps 3,4& 5. We will get best syllabus meeting current requirements.
  7. Now consider steps 1 & 2 to evolve best future ready syllabus.
  8. Now we have to do creativity and innovation to make the syllabus as USP .
It will be difficult for a single group to develop the syllabus. There should be a separate committees for Operations. Marketing, HR , Finance etc. Then we have to go to micro level to develop syllabus on say E-Marketing, Social Media in Talent Spotting etc.

BOS members are empowered faculty members operate in isolation. Teachers involvement would definitely yield expected result.

Please find attached a model syllabus we had worked out long time ago for reference.
Best Regards,
Bholanath

Odisha Higher education minister Pradeep Panigrahi urged academics to revamp the present syllabi for higher education and to design it such that students may compete with others at the national and international level.

"The percentage of students from the state who are successful at the national and international level is very nominal. The success rate of students from other states, particularly southern Indian states, is higher than our state," Panigrahi said.

"This is the time for academics to think about why this sorry state of affairs continues in the state and to take responsibility to produce the best students from their institutes," he said.

Referring to his recent visit to some of the colleges in the state, the minister said the general knowledge of several students in various institutes was poor. "Being the education minister, I am ashamed of the poor state of affairs," he said.

He said there were large scale vacancies in the job market at both the national and international level. But students from Odisha could not compete at those levels unless the standard of education improved. "The college and university authorities should take responsibility to meet the challenges," Panigrahi said.

He also stressed on the participatory method of teaching wherein interaction between students and teachers is high. The minister also asked teachers to upgrade their knowledge, reported ToI.
