It is really a matter of great concern to read the comments "Indian universities fail to appear in the top
global educational institutes'; list because of the poor teacher-student ratio".
We need to go deeper.
1.
What was the status of quality of education say 6 decades ago and that of today?
2.
In higher education, normally the set standards for faculty: students ratio are: 1:15 for UG and 1:10 for
PG. With the rise in number of students, the faculty position also has been rising (improving). In fact, the
% of vacant posts a few decades ago was higher than that of today due to regulation and awareness in
institutes.
3.
Is it proper to assess our performance in terms of some quantitative criteria adapted in advanced countries
without regards to our local issues, our efforts to be competitive, input-processing-output scenario, etc.?
4.
In the age of e-knowledge, e-technology and e-learning, what is the significance of faculty: students ratio?
In fact, it is of very minor concern now.
5.
Are we putting right efforts to improve the scenario using such tools as Lean philosophy, Kaizen, JIT,
SMED, PDCA, 5S, etc.?
6
what are our achievements in adopting green-education, wastage reduction, paperless institutes, processing
small batches of students like small batch manufacturing using techniques like cellular manufacturing,
sequencing and scheduling of academic activities(we actually utilize hardly 30% time of academic year for
real academic work), automaton, FMS, etc.?
Does not the said comment show our helplessness in the matter?

because of delays in the process of roster verification.Roster verification is an exercise by which the
staff strength of the university is assessed to ensure that the reservation quotas, such as those for
scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, other backward castes, are properly implemented.The initial delay was
caused due to a change in the manner in which the roster verification was carried out. Until now it was
carried out at the department level, but this was changed to university level, he said. "However, the
introduction of reservations for Marathas and Muslims and subsequent stay on the matter by the Bombay High
Court has left the new appointment of teachers in a limbo," Gade added, reported ToI.
