[MTC Global] Distance education gets boost

The Central government is planning to form an autonomous regulatory body for distance education and give it an independent existence on the lines of the existing regulatory bodies for various education disciplines. The Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL), which is part of the University of Mumbai (MU), has taken the initiative to have a meeting of directors of 20 distance education institutes across the country to discuss and highlight the issues that need to be addressed by the council soon after it is formed. The Distance Education Council of India is awaiting the approval of the parliament to come into existence.

According to Dr D. Harichandan, director, IDOL, distance education has always been considered a secondary source of education with university and colleges being the preferred mode for education. However, with more and more people wanting to pursue higher education while working, the role of distance education has become more pronounced. "The proposed name of the council is Distance Education Council of India and the proposal has already been approved by academicians and is now awaiting the passing of the proposal by parliament to come into existence," said Dr Harichandan.

He stated that the meeting of directors that would be hosted by the IDOL, MU would dwell on urgent issues that need to be addressed by the DECI and making its working smoother. The meeting will be held on January 16 and 17.
