Re: [MTC Global] Effective Career Counseling to Address the Employability Concern

Each mail in this thread carried a different perspective:Prof Dutta's bordered on systemic involvement to counselling in teens to adults and then  the process.
The  biggest stumbling block is the predetermination/choice of a career based on nothingness/thin air: parents and children all want to be Engineers because there is pot of a seventy eighty thousand job at   the end of it little realising the world has moved on;and then there's the foreign study/job/posting.
How do we combat that to show that if they are excellent painters for instance they will earn more than their counterparts. At the  Management studies level many believe they will migrate into managership automatically and seamlessly.
My take and experience: career counselling is identifying an individual's skill and attitude;finding a career that banks on these skills and attitudes and then to identify needs to fill the gaps.Is a faculty qualified for it-not too sure;some maybe but definitely not all.For it involves updating information on sunrise industries.current market requirements and counselling-each of thema skill in itself.Hence left to professionals.

Dear All,

An effective Career Counseling mechanism can address many problems w.r.t employability and employment. But, are we ready to answer the following questions:

·         When should career counselling begin?

·         What is the role of faculty in career counselling?

·         What should career counselling include?

·         What percentage of students get internships through faculty connections?

·         What percentage of students with internships are offered jobs?

·         What is the role of alumni and the alumni office in helping graduates find jobs?

·         What is the percentage of graduates who are employed at graduation? After six months?

·         How is employment information included in admission marketing and branding plans?

If we can answer the above questions correctly , we can make a good move.
