Re: [MTC Global] ESIC to close down 400 medical, dental colleges across country

Dear Sir, Superficially, this decision seems to retrograde. We need to ask the question
why did ESIC enter medical education in the first place. As a laymen, we understand that
ESIC was started to provide inexpensive medical care to industrial workers. Employees
below a certain salary level were entitled to ESIC facilities for medicare in order to
ensure that poor health of the workers were adequately attended by the hospitals run by
them.
ESIC also registered private medical practitioners to provide consultation to poor
workers as well as for home visits. In short ESIC had the makings of a complete
healthcare system for the workers employed in factories.
The money came from the contributions from the employers and employees and formed the
corpus of funds. ESIC is a Govt. run scheme. Given this scenario, how did ESIC enter into
medical education and why? Surely, there must be compelling reasons for doing so.

But assuming that medical education in the ESIC run hospitals added to the healthcare
infrastructure then closing them down is an act of dismantling this infrastructure. What
then is instituted in its place?

Today when we are talking of building the infrastructure for industrial growth, the need
for adequate healthcare facilities for the factory employees must be also a priority.

The Govt says shortage of funds. This is strange. We have to then ask who or which agency
is responsible for the infrastructure and if it is not ESIC then why did it continue
providing such services in the first place. We don't have ready answers to such
questions. All that one can say is that the Govt must consider ways of augmenting and
improving such services rather than withdraw from them.

Are people on ESIC Board and management duds. They had opened these Medical institutions
as they had facilities and funds .How can it dry up in such a short time especially if it
is not govt aided then they can charge higher fees. We are having shortage of Medical
professionals and such a statement is bureaucratic and irresponsible.

The Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) has decided to shut down all its
medical, dental and nursing teaching institutions. While, ESIC is shutting down
approximately 400 institutions across India, the students and the faculty are fearing the
repercussion of this decision.A.K Agrawal, Director General of ESIC said, "ESIC should
exit the field of medical education entirely and the regular teaching faculty recruited
will be given an option of utilizing their services in the ESIC in a non teaching
role."The Medical students of the ESIC, medical students from Delhi, Indian Medical
Association, students from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Delhi University (DU),
organised a protest outside the Constitution Club in New Delhi on February 18. The
students demanded for the continuation of admissions and academic sessions. The students
also demanded for the renewal of permissions, validation and recognition of the degree
and faculty experienceDr. Sayantan Banerjee said, "The two main reasons that the
government is giving for the shutdown of medical colleges are the lack of funds and that
the medical education does not serve the core functioning of the ESI Corporation,"India
