[MTC Global] IIT-Jodhpur faculty, students demands Director’s removal

Students and faculty members have raised slogans against the "dictatorial" attitude of the IIT- Jodhpur Director CVR Murthy, demanding his resignation.

As part of their three-day agitation, the students assembled in large numbers at the residential complex of the institute demanding reinstatement of the terminated faculty and immediate removal of Murthy.

To intensify their protest, processions and candle marches are being planned fromFriday. "We will not give up till he (Murthy) is ousted. After Murthy goes, we want Ganesh Bagler reinstated, who was terminated without any reason, and a fair probe in all the pervious terminations or resignations since Murthy assumed charge", said a student.

Bagler, against whom the administration of IIT-J has moved a caveat in the high court to prevent him from going to the court, had also earned global acclaim for his research on "Negative Food Pairing" and has worked in Germany and the US.

Meanwhile, Murthy said the agitation was unfortunate and a scar on the institution of national repute. He said the students' allegations were baseless. Decisions to terminate faculty members were based on the recommendation of a review committee, which comprises members from across the country.

"After completing a year's probation, a committee reviews standards of faculty members and takes a call on retention or termination," said Murthy. But, according to a member of the teaching faculty, the services of at least 18 teachers were either terminated or they had quit since September 2013, when Murthy assumed charge, whereas only three faculty members have been appointed.

"The director's dictatorial attitude has choked the atmoshphere here and this is the main reason behind rampant resignations", alleged a faculty member on condition of anonymity.

As per institute's spokesperson, Amardeep Sharma, those who had quit, got better offers and decided to move on.

Meanwhile, two faculty members, including a lady teacher Snehlata Jaswal, have moved the high court. Snehlata's services were terminated three months before Ganesh Bagler's ouster. The lady teacher alleged that Murthy did not treat them well and he also harassed the staff.

A PhD in Cognitive Science from University of Edinburg, Snehlata had quit her IIT-Delhi job and joined the premier institure in Jodhpur to add value. Against the sanctioned strength of 90 faculty members, IIT-J currently has only 45 teachers, out of which only 35 are permanent, ToI reported.
