Dear friends,

I just thought of sharing with you my views on depression.

Depression is defined as a mood disorder in which feelings of sadness, loss, anger, or frustration interfere with everyday life for weeks or longer. ( National Institute of Mental Health) . There are various stages of depression such as- ..major depression, bipolar disorder, dysthymic disorder, cyclothymic disorder, postnatal depression  and seasonal affective disorder.  The causes of depression are factors like- .genetic, biological, trauma etc.  Basically it is said that people with delicate mind and heart are more vulnerable to depression.  In other words sensitive people are more likely to get depression than others. When a person is unable to adjust himself to the external world, surroundings and the people around him, he tends to withdraw into a shell leading to loneliness which causes depression. It is also observed that several great personalities have undergone depression, while many of them have recovered to normalcy; unfortunately some of them have succumbed to it. Several popular artistes, politicians, industrialists and leaders across the world have gone through depression, especially when their career/ personal lives were at a low ebb.
Hence, of late we find people and organizations are using emotional intelligence as a tool to measure the maturity levels of the people. Leading business organizations use E.I. as one of the interview tools to gauge the mental maturity of people while hiring for leadership positions. Relationship management, social awareness, self management and self awareness are the critical components of E.I.
Value systems, character and morals a person imbibes in his childhood shape his E.I. to a greater extent. While a good parental upbringing can mould a child's value systems, teachers and grandparents play a crucial role in shaping a child's character and morals, whereas joint family system teaches a child on how to move with the people and the society at large.
Unfortunately in the current era of nuclear families most of the parents being working couple, they do not have the time and energy to spend quality time with their children. Nor do the children have the chance to be with grandparents since it is anathema in nuclear families. Therefore, one finds grandparents confined to old age homes and children dumped into baby care centers as the wife and husband shuttle between their homes and offices.  Children in these nuclear families have access to all the material comforts but with very little people interaction. When these children grow up and enter the external world, they are unprepared to face it. They lack in interpersonal skills and communication that are essential to relationship management and they are not able to adapt themselves in the society. This many times leads to frustration and depression.  In this era of competitive world the parents and the teachers in schools only tell on how to succeed by working hard, whereas no lessons are taught on how to face the failures in the world. As a result when the child encounters failure he or she is unprepared to face it. This is also one of the factors that cause depression in the youth.
Cure for depression ?
Doctors prescribe medicines and drugs to control the depression. As depression has chances of recurring, doctors recommend to continue the medication, though the dosage of drugs and medicines may vary depending on the severity of depression. Therefore the medical treatment of depression is more of controlling in nature rather than curative. However, there are also a number of cases where people have been cured from depression and in these cases the willingness and mental toughness of the patient play a significant role and the medicines are only supplements. Though doctors claim depression is caused by chemical imbalances in the brain, the root cause for such chemical imbalances is not clearly known so far.  Doctors cite genetic factors as one of probable reasons for depression.  However, there are also quite a number of cases where people fell into depression without genetic factors. In general terms one can say that people get depression when they are unable to control their thoughts or moods. Emotional control or controlling the moods is possible only when a person is able to exercise control over his thoughts and emotions. Ancient Hindu sages prescribed Yoga and meditation to control the mind and emotions. Pranayama is one of the best techniques which enable a person to exercise control over his breathing process and in turn control the emotions. People when they are highly charged up and emotive one can observe that their breathing cycle (inhaling and exhaling) increases rapidly. Since people who practice pranayama can exercise better control over their breathing, they will be in a better position to control their emotions as well. Meditation leads to control of mind and its thoughts. Therefore, people who practice pranayama and meditation will be in a better position to manage depression. No wonder several doctors not only in India but all over the world equally recommend yoga and meditation along with medication for depression as holistic treatment.
Paranoid schizophrenia is one of the advanced stages of depression yet there are instances of people with paranoid schizophrenia leading normal lives and in some cases even living successfully as prominent, public personalities. ( Dr.Frederick  Frese who suffers from schizophrenia and has been a patient in Ohio Mental Hospital later rose to become chief psychologist of the same mental hospital and also played a key role in a  national campaign to end discrimination against the mentally ill.)
Conclusion-
While good parenting, proper schooling and joint family system can make a child to learn the art of relationship management and social awareness, yoga and meditation can make a person to pick up skills in self management and self awareness. Sigmund Freud , famous Austrian neurologist and father of psycho analysis says imbalances between unconscious mind ( ID), sub conscious mind ( EGO) and conscious mind ( Super Ego) cause neurotic disorders in the people.  Our Indian Vedas and philosophy go one step ahead and say that when one travels beyond the conscious mind ( Super ego) and realizes the super conscious mind ( the spirit behind the universe) he will attain the eternal bliss.

Dear friends,Good morning.==============================================================

From a Therapist: 5 things you don't understand about
depression

Depression
is one of the most common mental health difficulties in all over the
world. But despite how common it is, there are still many
misunderstanding and misconceptions. Here are 5 that you need to know.

The
recent death of Robin Williams has brought a lot of attention to
depression. It's tragic that a beautiful life of laughter such as Robin
Williams' could be cut short without it being the result of an accident
or chronic illness like cancer.

But
the truth is, Robin Williams' death WAS the result of a chronic
illness. But instead of it being a more noticeable chronic illness (like
cancer) it was the result of less obvious chronic illness called
depression.

Many
people misunderstand depression. In fact, many
people don't even know that depression can be a chronic illness.
Despite that depression has been around for ages, there are still many
misunderstandings and mis-perception about depression and those who
suffer from it.

So
in an effort to help you understand and help those around you who
suffer from depression, here are 5 things you probably don't understand
about depression:

1)
Depression is
debilitatingA
lot of people think that depression is just really bad sadness. And
people think that because it's "just really bad sadness" you should be
able to continue with life as you always have until you get over it. But
depression isn't the same "everyday sadness" that comes and goes.

Depression is different from regular sadness because it is debilitating. In other words, it keeps people from being able to live
the life they want to live. In fact, The World Health Organization has identifieddepression as the fourth leading cause of disabilityaround the world and projects it to be the second leading cause by 2020.

2) Depression is common

In arecent study,
it was discovered that approximately 10 percent of the U.S. suffers
from depression. And that number is growing by 20 percent each year.
That means that one out of every ten people you know has some sort of
depression. And you'll likely know more and more people who have
depression over time.

3) Depression isn't caused by a chemical imbalance

In fact, nobody really knows what causes depression. TheNational Institute of Mental Health statesthat,
"Most likely, depression is caused by a combination of genetic,
biological, environmental, and psychological factors." Because it's not
specifically known what causes depression, it can be difficult to treat.
It's also difficult to prevent. As a result, it can't be cured simply
with medication(s) or with psychotherapy. Because there are many complex
factors behind depression, sometimes the treatment is complex, too.

4) You don't just get over depression

Because
many people think depression is caused by a chemical imbalance, a lot
of people also think that you get over depression just like you get over
a cold. Afterall, if depression is caused by a chemical imbalance, you
just have to wait for your body to correct itself.

The
truth is, many people who struggle with depression struggle with it for
a long time. In fact, if you have depression once, you're 50 percent
more likely to have depression at least one more time in your life.
Often, the treatment for depression isn't a one-time solution, either.
It's often a mix of ongoing medication and psychotherapy to make sure it
doesn't come
back.
5) Depression isn't for sissies

A lot of people think that it's only the weak or feeble who get depression. But the truth is, manygreat people have had depressionincluding Abraham Lincoln, Emily Dickinson, J.K. Rowling, Terry Bradshaw, Daryl Strawberry and Robin Williams just to name a
few.These
5 things aren't the only misunderstandings people have about
depression, but they are some of the most common ones. Knowing these
misunderstandings can help you in case you ever experience depression.

Most
importantly, knowing these 5 misunderstandings can help you be more
empathetic to those who suffer from depression. It can also help you as
you try to help others who are suffering from depression. It
will help them have a safe place to talk about their difficulties and
give them a shoulder to lean on when they need it. And most important of
all,
you may be able to offer them shelter from a storm of misunderstanding.
