In a surprising move, the Punjab school education department has asked teachers to visit YouTube and go through the content related to the syllabus of Classes 6 to 10 uploaded on the website to enhance their teaching skills. It has also asked teachers to teach some topics of mathematics of Class 8 on YouTube which were uploaded on the site on April 28.
The department has also instructed teachers to teach students by using YouTube, but the instructions do not make it clear whether the site video should be watched by the students and teachers together in the class or not.
Meanwhile, Rajesh Monga, general secretary, Math Teachers Association, criticising the circular alleged that the department is only promoting and advertising a private website, which is being run from California, US, and whose source of income is advertisements displayed on it.
He alleged that the department has doubted the capability of teachers and is trusting on a foreign website. There are possibilities to upload fake and wrong facts on YouTube and even YouTube had not verified the authenticity of videos, uploaded on that website.
Monga stated that it would be dangerous for independent thinking and creativity of teachers as well as students. He demanded withdrawal of the circular as by doing so the department is only advertising a private company.
Assistant state project director Amarbir Singh denied knowledge about the circular and said he had nothing to do with the matter.
