I took an oath when I was confered the degree of Postgraduation in business administartion.
And remember correctly it talked of ethical standards of not using our profession..to become means to justify the ends.
I feel proud of having taken it...most of my collegues have stood by it..
I guess we can be termed as being idealistic. And not very practical...although we keep telling each other to be practical ..In a jovial and light hearted manner .
But I don't believe our juniors took it seriously. I met some of them in a university conference. I didn't fing them to be to enthusiastic about the whole oath thing..they found the whole thing....as one of them termed it....very decorative..some old traditional crap.
They found it hard to believe it ..we believed it.
They pointed out how we compromise on daily basis.
The thing is they are not to blame. We all are to blame. We do compromise..have been doing since ages. So we appear to be although idealistic...in truth we allow corbers to be cut...
They our juniors say are following in our footstep. ..only in a more rude and balant disregard for laws and systems.
--Dear All,This has been debated many times for last few years specially after Harvard Class of 2009 started this process. Incidentally, I am one of the signatories on online MBA oath taken by many few years back.I agree with friends that Oath does not make much difference to the conduct and behavior of most, it is still a necessary ritual for assumption of public offices world over. It is also practiced by Legal and Medical Practitioners. I , for one, will suggest that Management Graduates should also be administered an oath of highest professional conduct in professional life. It will definitely keep reminding them of expected behavior in critical situations, doesn't matter if they do not voluntarily adhere to that.Even if it makes a difference to a small fraction of them and changes their conduct in few situations in their professional life, it is worth the effort.Regards,Dr R P SinghSent from Windows MailIf we expect to instill moral values and build character through Oath taking then we are mistakes. We have been administering a Management Professional Oath at the Convocation ceremony for the PGDM students, but I doubt its outcome in practice. Similar is my observation about the Hippocrates Oath delivered to Medical Practitioners or to Lawyers to uphold the sanctity of their profession. It becomes a ritual without any visible effect in practice.Prof (Dr) Manoj MehrotraDirectorSchool of Management Sciences,LucknowMob: 9919777701On Fri, May 29, 2015 at 11:40 AM, kiran paranjpe <kdparanjpe@rediffmail.com> wrote:Dear Sir, Taking an oath is a custom that has come down from the past. An oath is a
public declaration that as a member of a creed a person will follow its principles,
traditions and customs. An oath is a confirmation of an initiation rite. So we have oaths
administered to the officer cadets of our defence and civil, police or any other service
of the nation. An oath commits a person to discharge the duties in the expected manner
that characterizes the creed or cult or an office of national importance.
Does it make sense for a B-school to administer an oath but does not follow its own laid
down principles? A run of the mill B-school administering an oath only serves a vain and
senseless purpose. If at all an oath is to be administered then it would be to remind the
students of their formal duty by the Institute and to uphold the dignity and decency in
public.Beyond this it would serve no purpose to make anyone take an oath only to consign
it later.

Subject: Re: [MTC Global] [Big Debate] Should the MBA Students Take an Oath?People do not
follow or remember oath, so it is not necessary. On the similar logic, many things may
not be necessary as people do not follow those. We need to make an honest effort to
create awareness and encourage students towards certain directions to make them binding
and responsible.Character building is a domain which is little different than the oath.
The question comes in my mind "Is personal values / character and professional ethics are
interdependent ? or both can exist independent of each other".HBS has a very good
professional ethics code for MBA graduates.Kindest Regards,BholanathOn Thu, May 28, 2015

the world? What about MBA professors or students in other disciplines ? I think the whole
point of introducing oath is meaningless when daily prayers in most Indian families does
not lead to building a strong character. Doctors have to take the oath because they are
dealing with life and death issues. The worst the MBAs could do is manipulate profits and
losses, nothing more.Kuldeep Nagi
