It is a good estimate of happiness. But a few queries:
The Happiness Quotient (index) is defined as:
Number of Desires Fulfilled
Happiness = --------------------------------------
Number of Desires Entertained
- Whether all types of desires are expected to lead to happiness?
- Is there any co-relationship between desires and happiness?
- Will a large number of desires entertained yield more happiness? If the number is infinity, what happens to happiness?
- If the number of desires entertained is Zero, Happiness seems to touch infinity. Since no desire, its fulfillment does not arise.
- Fulfillment of a desire is in itself a "desire".
- Happiness expressed above is like efficiency, ratio between output/input. Efficiency can be increased through: (a) keep output constant, decrease input, (b) keep input constant, increase output or (c ) increase both input and output, but output to a larger extent.
- Whether happiness is a state of mind or a matter of status?
- Whether state of mind and the status are interwoven, interdependent?

Subject: [MTC Global] Happiness Quotient
Dear MTCians,
-- The Happiness Quotient (HQ) proposed by Prof. Sai Kumar is quite interesting. It quietly encompasses interdisciplinary knowledge and concepts including those from Psychology, Economics, Mathematics, Spiritual Science and Religious Studies.
Buddhism strongly advocates constant check/control on desires. Despite being a "less developed country (LDC)" and having a low per capita income, Bhutan is voted/rated as the happiest country in the world. There is a moral and message here for individuals, families and nations. The idea is simple but profound. It asserts that wellbeing is more important than wealth; people are more important than profits; affection is more important than affluence. Contentment is, thus, stated to be a continuos feast. It';s our collective responsibility to promote happiness in the world. Peace, progress and prosperity should always have happiness as their underlying (both implicit and explicit) goal.
Regards,
Surender
