Re: [MTC Global] IIMs divided over NDA govt's new draft bill

Dear all
If certain IIMs want to accept govt. proposals why one assumes the decision out of no choice  . It may be the best decision in interest of their institution.

Dear Bholanath

This news-item quoted by you is misleading since it frivolously presumes one size fits all. It is like the story where animals - elephant, cow, deer, lion, leopard, rabbit and rabbit - all being asked to climb a tree or take part in a race with same winning parameters.

All IIMs are different with their individual distinguishing core competencies and pros & cons. Older three IIMs - Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Calcutta are well established, which have not been taking any funds from the government now for over a decade. They would naturally oppose any move for undermining their autonomy and more so, since their diploma is rated higher nationally and internationally as compared to MBA degree from any university in India. As per a study, presently among the Indian CEOs worldwide, overwhelming around 65% are from IIMs and out of them around 75% are from IIMA.

As compared to IIMs A, B & C; other IIMs specially newer ones are heavily dependent on the government for funding. Therefore, naturally they have no choice but to toe the government line.

In view of the above, there is bound to be difference in approaches to IIMs Bill by various IIMs.

Thanks and best regards

NEW DELHI: IIM is a divided parivar over the new draft bill moved by the government with some saying it will turn the institutes into "mere operating centres" with no autonomy while others have welcomed the provisions on grant of degrees instead of diplomas and the focus on research.

On Thursday, A M Naik, chairperson of the board of governors of IIM-Ahmedabad joined the institute's director Ashish Nanda and IIM-Bangalore director Sushil Vachani in protesting against the draft IIM bill.

Naik, also chairperson of engineering giant Larsen & Toubro, said the proposed bill will curtail "autonomy", reduce IIMs to "mere operating centres" and give the Centre "sweeping powers". He said the earlier draft agreed upon by IIMs and the HRD ministry was completely changed. Naik said the bill was floated suddenly and IIMs got to see it only now.
