--Director of the College of Engineering in Pune, Dr Anil D Sahasrabuddhe, has been appointed as the new Chairman of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). Sahasrabuddhe, who takes over from Shankar S Mantha, has 23 years of teaching experience.
Expected to take charge next month, Sahasrabuddhe says there are a few issues that need to be dealt with urgently.
In a country where nearly one-third of engineering seats have remained vacant over the last few years, Sahasrabuddhe says it is probably the most urgent issue. "The number of colleges has increased phenomenally over the last decade or so. Many have no capability of holding so many seats. Also, because the number of students is less, they are not able to maintain faculty. Yet, we see so many new applications and new colleges. My contention is that we need a stronger entry barrier by raising the bar to a much higher level. Only if a new player is better than existing colleges should it be given permission."
While Sahasrabuddhe says that the AICTE has a council of 50-odd senior experts from across the country , he does have a few solutions in mind. He says that in some cases, forming a cluster of two-three colleges that have less intake and combining their resources or even allowing some colleges that are not doing well to be taken over by performing institutions could be one solution.
"The quality and employability of students, increased focus on creating a research culture are some other important issues. I would say that getting our colleges rated globally should be our focus. Though our quality of education is quite high, there are some parameters employed while rating institutions globally, which we never bother about. We need to work on these aspects," Sahasrabuddhe says.
Faculty improvement also remains on his agenda.
Saying that industry-academic interface needs to be looked at in a more in-depth fashion, Sahasrabuddhe feels it's happening at an artificial level currently. "I think every year, even the faculty must go and work in the industry for a few weeks. If they learn of practical realities of the industry, they can prepare students better. Maybe not all the faculty but on rotation basis, such a thing is possible and should be done," he says, reported Indian Express.
