American civil rights activist Jesse Jackson made a caustic comment on Wednesday that the Wall Street, the global financial hub, has bought over the US Government.
Replying to a Business Line question on the relationship between the State power in the US and the Wall Street, Jackson said: "The State has been bought out by the Wall Street."
After an inspiring lecture at the Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta, he said that evidently not a single criminal case was registered against the banks, which collapsed with billions of dollars worth of public money.
Jackson, who is leading the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, said the struggle of the African-Americans in the US has changed its paradigm. "Now it's about economic rights of the poor and their access to credit, capital, investment, technology and management."
Rainbow PUSH is a non-profit organisation formed after merging two non-profit organisations, Operation PUSH (People United to Save Humanity) and the National Rainbow Coalition, both founded by Jesse Jackson.
The merged entity currently is focussing on economic empowerment of the African-American population along with human rights.
"Poverty is a weapon of mass destruction… Poverty is terror that works against the national security," Jackson said.
During the moving lecture, he asked the premier Indian B-school students to provide leadership to take the country out of the morass of poverty and inequality.
"Make a new India," he urged. To the nation's 'dream-makers', the evangelist gave a clarion call: "Show that you care." He asked them to commit here and now to become the change managers for India.
In his 40-minute lecture, Jackson made the IIM-C students take multiple vows. In unison, they promised to work to globalise economic justice, human rights, education, as also technology and environment security.
