[MTC Global] Sugata Marjit appointed interim VC of Calcutta University

Sugata Marjit has been given the reins of Calcutta University as the interim Vice-Chancellor, he is presently serving as the RBI professor of industrial economics at Centre for Studies in Social Sciences.

Education minister Partha Chatterjee made the announcement, a day after present VC Suranjan Das gave him a piece of his mind in his "confidential note" over the assault on teachers by a group of students.

The development comes within 24 hours of the VC's telling the media that he has recommended legal steps against the accused. He had also mentioned that it won't be possible for him to continue in the VC's chair if legal steps were not taken against the accused.

On the other hand, Marjit is now abroad on a teaching assignment. Marjit is known to be close to chief minister Mamata Banerjee. He has earlier served successfully as the chairman of the West Bengal Higher Education Council before putting in his papers for his academic engagements.

Marjit has a tough task cut out for him. He has to restore normality at a time when a section of CU teachers and employees are at war with the VC over a host of issues, including filling up various vacancies in the CU syndicate.

Meanwhile, representatives of the "Save Autonomy, Save University" forum are waiting for the meeting with VC on Monday. "We will continue with the agitation till Monday. We hope the VC will tell us about the steps he would take," said CU professor Ishita Mukherjee.

The government wants the VC to form a three-member committee to probe the alleged funds diversion by finance officer Harisadhan Ghosh. Ghosh had reportedly parked university funds in several bank accounts in the city in the name of the university, reported ToI.
