Re: [MTC Global] In what way the open universities (OU) and traditional ones (TU) differ

I endorse the views of Kiran P as follows.

I think there is a need to further widen the spread of distance mode learning to smaller units at the level of small tuition classes. Such a movement will enable even a poor chaiwala, subjiwala to take the benefit of secondary and graduate and even higher education.

The quality of education offered by IGNOU, Dr BR Ambedkar University, Hyd is of a  fairly high standard, especially an MBA program. They are doing complete justice to Distance education & enabling every educated Indian , who missed the bus of  collegiate education - a new opportunity.

2 things are needed - One is a proper streamlining of Operations, as there are various disparate units, disconnected depts & different courses. has to be done ASAP. Second, make the OU"s more customer driven like giving the right information to any one who walks in, good faculty delivering guest lectures & things like that.

Then Government should shutdown all the open universities of India.
And only regular university should be there , but think about the person
who is earning and learning too , there are majority of people in India who or their parents can not pay the fee of so call regular university or private Institute , but they want to learn , so they are doing job , as well they are enrolled in OU
to get some degree/diploma like you , either our government should offer Free and Equal education to all , or every citizen of India have right to educate.

Very useful and interesting discussion. There is no difference in the quality of education between the TUs and OUs per se. The difference is in the quality of the learner.
OUs have primarily evolved to fill the inadequacies of the TUs. OUs are flexible and suit the needs of the modern life.
Specifically the courses of IGNOU are developed by professors of other premier institutions like IIMs and IITs. The MBA programme of IGNOU is tough to complete.
And is there any regulation that holders of OU degrees are not eligible for teaching positions? What is the basis of such discrimination? Can anyone kindly clarify?
With regards and best wishes,

Most impt point regdg placements. If it is so then why for any university or collegge faculty position open learning or correspondence student is not eligible to apply . Only full time program students can apply.

Dear all,

I am a self motivated hard working person. I am feeling proud that I am a alumni of IGNOU(Central University of India)..I have done my Bachelor, Masters and PhD  from this esteemed university. IGNOU is boon for poor student (belongs to general category) like
us who can not afford regular fee structure of so called Traditional Universities where quality of education and research is at bottom and politics is at top.

IGNOU has been emerged as a centre of excellence in education, research and development leaving behind all conventional / traditional universities not only in India but also in world. Its world class infrastructure, systematic framework and refined self instructional
quality based study materials and  eminent faculty members versed in their expertise and experience makes it different from other traditional universities of India.

Cutting across the barriers of caste, culture and religion, smoothing out inequalities, IGNOU has proved that "Education is a Liberating force as well as democratizing force"..

But I am very much worry about downfall of so called conventional or traditional universities and their regular & distance education programs which is really a matter of serious concern. They are charging more but giving nothing.

I am associated with several traditional universities as expert, faculty and examiner and I have seen the dearth.

And I personally feel that only quality based open education system can fulfil the dream of independent India and changing India..

Therefore more focus should be on lighting the lamp in every nooks and corner of India through value based education rather then debating on who is best Open University or Traditional University..Have we ever think why open university came into existence?
In these days faculties (professors and teachers) doesn';t want to stay in remote location(village) for teaching purpose..Trustees and Corporate Houses don';t want to start their schools and colleges in such remote and backward locations except few NGO ...Most
of these corporate houses and trusts are looking for mass benefits in terms of money and facilities for their own children and family.

Please shape your ideas and thoughts in positive direction to give education and recognition for all as alone we can';t win the race..

Respected sir

My response :

In what way the open universities (OU) and traditional ones (TU) differ in their objectives, outcomes and functioning?:

Similarity:a) both deliver education

b) both take fee

c) both take exam

d) both give degree

Difference: a) number of contact classes are less in OU

b) less interaction of students with teachers
What is the cost of education in open universities and traditional  ones?

Though it seems cost in OU is less but OU spends lots on rent.
Whether the cost of education affordable to masses?

In OU we still feel for Poors.
What is the dis-similarity in terms of programs, curriculum, examination pattern, etc  between OU and TU?

In my opinion with twenty four years of experience there is no difference.
What is the percentage of youths that have availed of the facility of OU?

Hard working self motivated learners complete the program in minimum duration. In IGNOU youth has availed opportunity in computer programs. Now youth is in social work,  English, hindi, economics etc.

And how did they get placed in market?

IGNOU IS NOW TAKING CARE OF PLACEMENT.

Recently INDIGO has selected 43 female students.
