Re: [MTC Global] An Inquiry on farmer's suicide

Hello,

All should think of improving farming techniques and minimum crop prices based on expenses made (for every year, it is not like fixed returns for years together.Even they should be guaranteed some profit like say 50% on actual expenses made for crop)

Tech savvy people should help them build "whats app" group to link and have access to weather forecasts and product prices across India. such app has been developed and in use in Maharashtra.

Thanks and Regards,

Dear Sirs,

For creating support network, by going beyond the legal / financial issues, we find multitude of situations faced by the rural farming community awaiting long-term measures:

  • Road Network and Logistic
  • 24X7 Electricity Network

  • Digital Information and Marketing Network
  • Payment Network
  • Climate-smart technology solutions for agriculture
  • Skill Development and Entrepreneurship for by-products

My own observation is that maximum suicides whether in farming or any other sector are due to increasing burden of debt on interest bearing loan obtained from unscrupulous financiers where interest rate may vary from 10% a month to 1% a day.  Poor people or those with limited financial resources have to take loan from hawks because there is no official channel money at reasonable rates is available to them. MUDRA seems to be one such effort and if it is sincerely implemented , I am sure incidences of suicide will considerably come down.

Dear All,

When we read local newspapers in Bangalore/Karnataka, there is a sudden increase in farmer's suicide and lot of media reports on this. No doubt that suicide is a complex psychological phenomena and may have an underlying mental health issues, I see more of  hopeless-uncertain economic condition and value conflicts. The incidents are followed by mass hysterical reaction through the media.

What as a management fraternity can do to the society at this juncture?
