Dear Sir, My own experience in school was that we were taught Carpentry as a craft class
in the afternoons. Although we subsequently never got to use it, I still feel that it
made us work with our hands and made us happy doing it. There are many skills that can be
imparted in school. Some of the crafts are: Electrical wireman, computer assembly,
Plumbing, carpentry, Bench fitting, Sewing by hand and machine, soldering, working with
plastic materials, etc. The craft workshops can be from the 6th standard till the 9th
standard. The crafts should be such that a large part of home repair can be done by the
individual. Craft learning is an integral part of learning in the Jewish society. Working
with hands is a must have, but in our belief that education is all about exams and paper
degrees,we have neglected this aspect. The Elementary Skills will provide the needed
security to our youth when temporarily out of employment.
There is also the need to inculcate socially acceptable behaviour that we as a nation
lack. Things like First Aid, Helping the injured, following safety procedures and more
importantly public hygiene, etc.
Best Regards,
K.Paranjpe

>A Simple program of DIY (Do it yourself) needs to be designed that includes all such
small maintenance activities for which generally you are stuck up waiting for the artisan
to come and help you. Small job of plumbing, nailing and screw fixing, pasting, cycle and
motorcycle repairing, changing a car tyre, ironing, repairing small electrical and
electronic gadgets etc.

Subject: [MTC Global] Introduction of Certain Trades at 7th Grade in Schools.
Dear All,
Though this is MTC, I am airing my views of introducing certain trades at School level to
make our children more independent.
I am of the view that if Trades like Carpentry, Plumbing and Electrification are
introduced at 7th Standard in schools to teach the basics of the above and empower the
students with practical training to enable them to attend to minor works at Home they
would become more independent, confident and self reliant.
Please Express your considered views on the above.
