Re: [MTC Global] An Excellent Teacher

To find out the characteristics or indicators for an excellent teacher is a herculean task for:

  1. What are the parameters of excellence?
  2. Can excellence be defined by mere words, phrases and some other parameters? or is it a pattern of behavior?
  3. Is not excellence path dependent?
  4. Is not excellence a relative term?
  5. Is there something like local and global excellence?
  6. Is it not possible that an excellent teacher fails in one case and succeeds in another?
  7. Is excellence one's mere perception? etc.
Please see the attachment. And find out, if possible, for what an excellent teacher stands for. Probably we may get different findings but could be true. Is is right if I say that defining excellent teacher is like defining an elephant  by four blind persons?

Regards.

Dear Sirs,

An excellent teacher may also need "research supportive academic environment", which will provide platform for great teaching, because the challenge of research attracts scholars to academic life, many of whom subsequently turn out to be superb teachers;

  • Research-oriented faculty members tend to be inquisitive, demanding, evidence-oriented, and intolerant of complacence in thinking.
  • Research-intensive business schools such as Stanford, Chicago, and MIT turned out students having more valuable MBA degrees than other schools with less research activity, as per Ronald Yeaple, the writer of the book,"The MBA Advantage".

The trick is in building a balanced mix of outstanding researchers and experienced business practitioners on institution's faculties to achieve both, cutting-edge research as well as great teaching.

  • Otherwise the peer review will only reflect,"We-are-OK: You-are-not-OK" approach and students will keep on wondering whether their investment in tuition fees along with forgone income of two years was worth it or not?

With warm regards,

G.S.Autee

An excellent teacher has the ability to communicate, engage, enthuse and at times entertain their students. They know their students, for example what makes them happy, sad, what wakes them up in the morning and how to stretch them to achieve their best. However, great teaching can't happen in isolation. Great teaching has to be shared because we need to be learning as well. If we are not prepared to learn how can we expect our students to learn? Methods to support collaborative practice and peer review are a must. Teachers need to be given time to plan, observe and review together in order to continually develop their skills. Technology can be a great enabler to support this. For example a secure portal where teachers can model good practice, share great ideas and provide mutual support will also help. Where schools value high quality professional development and invests in their staff, it is most likely that you will come across great teaching in abundance.
