You have mentioned very simple case. In one of phd viva exam, I observed there is one more name other than candidate and supervisor. I was told that third person helped In research. But third person showed this paper in his phd defense.

Some supervisors claim co-authorship of every publication written during the candidature. Do not think that this is right, assumed, proper or the default setting. The authorship of papers need to be discussed
