Re: [MTC Global] Indian Farmer Deaths not due to poverty--Noble Laureate
There cannot be any resonable doubt that it is poverty an lack of any persepectives which drives farmers into the last desperate step of committing suicide. The remarks of Mr. Yunus show that he has no real insight into the ground realities of these farmers and their plight. The debt trap is clear to see for everyone and besides, the highly lauded Yunus system of microfinancing can (and did and does!) lead to the same deadly debt trap which happened, for example, in many cases in AP and other places. Mr. Yunus should better inform himself of realities before he comments and, after all, what would be his guess?

Mr. Yunus, I feel, does not understand the culture and mindset of Indian community. When the loans are heavy, and the lenders (Banks include) threaten them to confiscate everything they have, it is a big shame to them in the village society. They are not like Vijay Malya. I think that is why Mr. Yunus made such comments.

Time to introspect..........
"On the increasing farmer suicides in India's hinterland, Yunus said that deaths were not only due to poverty. It does not look like they are extremely poor. I do not know if the deaths were only because they could not repay their load and the shame associated with that. People get use to things. They should not feel ashamed. I am just guessing the reason could be something else. Suicides are not happening in Bangladesh."
