Re: [MTC Global] University Industry Linkage Centre

Dear All,

The experience and observations of Prof. R Sabareesh hint us towards certain steps to make our graduates more employable. A few  of the ways are:

  1. Reduce drastically the theory hours/week/subject to almost half of the present.
  2. Practical may be increased and be conducted meticulously.
  3. Keep 60% curriculum uniform throughout the country and 40% by institute senior faculties who will be responsible for market driven subject curriculum designer and undertake their teaching.
  4. Give more stress on interactive class/lab. sessions for theories/practical.
  5. Introducing new market based subjects, industry interaction and research need to be the sole criteria for selection or promotion.                                               s.

Regards.

I am afraid about the sustenance of the concept of UGC.
It depends on the quality of the candidate, training content and the  trainer.
During my interaction with a few leading multi-national corporates in a recent international summit in Chennai, they insist on the role of the educational institutions to make students industry ready as the candidate is already paying HEFTY FEES to get a BASIC DEGREE - and most of the Govt / State / Central Universities have an outdated syllabus causing a mismatch between the industry requirement and the education offering.

Most of Educational Institutions  (except premier Top Tier) and those private ones taking a capitation / donation and focused on providing industry relevant curriculum can create COACH-ABLE AND EMPLOYABLE TALENT.

Industry feels the need to hire job-ready candidates as the current skilled workforce is estimated below 20%. Very few companies get into an academic-corporate alliance to recruit and train fresh graduates. In most of the institutions, the pass percentage of candidates from various courses is also on the lower side.

The grey side of the campus and lateral hiring could lead to DISGUISED UNEMPLOYMENT when the graduate with no career direction drops out from employment after working in a CALL CENTRE / DATA ENTRY / OUTSOURCING FIRM or any employment he was not the right fit.

NASSCOM and other Sector Skill Councils under the National Skill Development Corporation are working seriously to address these concerns to make Indians Employable by 2020.

A new term UIL is coined. I am hearing and participating in many activities called as IIPartneship. IILinkage, IIInteraction, TPOs, Joint Director (Training) initiatives, etc. Over the last  3 decades at least Rs. 1000 crore (pessimistic estimation) are spent on III with very limited success. Where does the weakness exist? The kindling does not start. I propose a few things:
  1. Provide 3 months in-service training in industry in a block of 2 years for all employees, dully setting objectives and assessing employee';s performance in industry.
  2. Projects at UG/PG level need to be industry/community based.
  3. Two  industry visits and two expert talks per semester/per class.
  4. Every faculty must be a life member of 3 Indian professional bodies, half of the cost to be paid by institute.
  5. Fix accountability for III for every faculty and must be an essential  part of PA.
  6.  The degree of III activities performed by a faculty need be a base for CAS/Selection and for releasing increment.
  7. The UIL centre, like  Students'; Council, may not prove rewarding and may generate one more bureaucratic hurdle.
  8. Learning lessons from the past mistakes will be  a fruitful approach to run UILs.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has directed Universities to ensure compliance of university-industry interaction guidelines in all departments of the varsity as well as affiliated colleges.

Media coordinator, DAVV, Prof Chandan Gupta said, "We have received the directives. We have been actively holding seminars and workshops to interact with industry and revise curriculum. Guidelines will be followed and affiliated colleges will also be intimated."

UGC has expressed significance of university-industry interaction stating it has become an important agenda of higher education on policy-making front at both national and international levels.

Active meeting and collaborations are mutually beneficial. "Participation of expertise available in the faculty of universities in offering consultancy services to industries and assisting their research and developmental work and participation of industries in placements and internships of students will increase employability," states the circular.

Considering the importance, UGC had framed guidelines for the scheme of establishing university-industry inter-linkage centres (UIL) in the universities, reported ToI.
