Skills Required and Job Description:

Our client is looking for talented engineers who are willing to take ownership of our customer facing services.
They maintain over 30 platforms which provide services to thousands of customers, many of which are household names.
These services use a wide variety of technology stacks, but all have strict performance commitments.
Our client needs not only understand technology, but understand the processes and philosophies required to run highly available (>99.99%) and high performing (<50ms) services.
Candidates must be willing to accept responsibility for end-to-end quality of service and must be able to build the tools necessary to ensure success.
Our client's technical operations group is committed to driving success through planning and documentation.
This includes the development and maintenance of documentation, run books, checklists and capacity plans.
Candidates must be willing to document all work activities, use and expand existing checklists, write run books for other organizations and participate in peer reviews. Come prepared to provide examples of your documentation!

On the technology side, our client is looking for people who can maintain all of the components in the technology stack.
Linux skills (administration and troubleshooting) is a must, as is networking (routing, firewalls, VPN), virtualization technologies (VMWare, cloud, data management (SQL, Lucene, Hadoop, no-SQL) and web technologies (http, SSL).
Candidates must have the ability to directly manipulate these components, as well as automate processes that can deploy and support these components.
Our client is a highly automated environment. They write software to do anything that needs to be done more than twice. Candidates must be fluent with at least one automation language (bash, perl, python) and comfortable writing software that connects to third party APIs.

On the process side, our client is looking for people who can execute best practices for making changes to customer facing services, responding to issues and keeping platforms secure. Candidates must be able to thoroughly document a change; including steps to deploy, steps to test and steps to roll back.
Candidates must be able to explain their change in a public forum as part of the change review process.
Our client is an ITIL shop and exposure to ITIL principals for change, incident and problem management is a plus.
Our client strives to be a metrics driven organization.
They build trending for their hardware and software, develop capacity plans and build predictive alerts that notify them of upcoming issues before the customers are impacted. Everyone is pushed to continually improve the monitoring of our client's platforms. Candidates must be able to build monitors that respond to data pulled from component utilization, logs, SNMP traps and databases.
Experience building synthetic transaction monitors is a big bonus. Experience with Splunk, graphite or Nagios is a bonus. Come prepared to discuss your monitoring strategies! While not strictly enforced, our client has found that the most successful candidates have 10-15 years of experience in system administration and software engineering.

These candidates have a graduate or post-graduate degree in a STEM field and have experience with SDLC, ITIL and Agile methodologies. The ideal candidate would be self-motivated, capable of working in a fast paced and highly autonomous team.

  • Ability to quickly expand skills to administer other Linux/Unix distributions. 
  • Demonstrated mastery of administration and forensic commands necessary to triage and troubleshoot unfamiliar hosts and platforms.
  • Capable of understanding tuning and troubleshooting concepts. Able to retrieve performance data from multiple Linux/Unix distributions.
  • Demonstrated ability to review and deploy hardware/OS resources to meet application requirements. 
  • Conceptual understanding of IP routing, OSI model, socket connections, IP protocols and DNS.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot host based IP issues (IP address, routing, firewall)
  • Demonstrated ability to configure and troubleshoot all network related issues (IP addresses, routing, firewalls, load balancers, ports, etc).
  • Demonstrated understanding of traffic shaping strategies and implementation.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex IP network and routing issues.  
  • Write basic scripts for automation using both scripting languages and programming languages.
  • Demonstrated competence in at least one language.
  • Conceptual understanding of development best practices (change management, version control, build processes)  
  • Demonstrated competence in a both scripting and programming languages.
  • Competence includes the ability to automate software installs, automate administration tasks and write applications that interface with databases and third party APIs.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and write an application from a specification.
  • Demonstrated ability to peer review code for development best practices. 
  • nstall and troubleshoot applications with the use of appropriate documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise automated installs.
  • Solicit assistance when required. 
  • Demonstrated ability to develop installation automation.
  • Review documentation and software components delivered by development team.
  • Compile and install open source software packages.
  • Provide logging specifications to development teams.

Qualifications:

Author installation documentation for automated processes.
