Re: [MTC Global] Can Ethics be enforced ?

I agree and empathize with Dr. Hariharan. These kind of corruption and malaise also exists in private manufacturing organizations in India, though on a comparative lesser scale. The basic problem is lack of sense of belonging for the employees, lack of their sincerity and, an equal measure of apathy from the employer's side too, in certain cases. Both the section is out there to make money, one by way of monthly income and plus, the other by way of making profits! This inherent work culture prevents the organizations to be collectively efficient, productive and world class for a sustained period of time!

However, when shrinking profits, loss and job retrenchment stare at all people, good sense prevails at times. A good , astute and honest CEO can turnaround the organization when he works with an entrepreneurial zeal flanked by professionalism on one side and ethics on another side, and he enforces that strongly; to a certain extent he could be ruthless also, and that is required too. Most of the people would not object to save their job, if one does not find a suitable alternative. Sometimes people would not object to a pay cut during recessive periods in such situations. The dedicated ones with some ethics and conscience stay back and the CEO has to gradually weed out the parasites. That is how some organizations recover and turnaround.

My 19 years of past industry experience says that. However, I would be happy and keen to learn from others experiences too.

warm regards,

P.S.Raychaudhuri

Dear All

I am a victim of unethical practices of Superiors in a Central Public Sector Organization, I was working there for 16 years. When I joined that organization I was totally unaware of such a practice there. I have learned that from the then General Manager to Store Keepers in that organization was corrupt. I heard that the HR Manager had stolen eggs from the canteen for their home use. I have joined the organization as Materials Manager and I am harassed several time for not agreeing to their wish to issue materials from stores without withdrawal slips. When I have reported many such wrong practices, GM started threatening me. The production planning department officers freely enter the stores and remove material without issue slip. Have you ever heard a manufacturing organization manufactures its product with 30% material cost? It never happens. They were boosting the sales and profit by unethical practices with out showing actual consumption of materials. It is not a culture of any organization, but it is a habit of some unethical Employees who joins the organizations with ulterior motives. Now I have learned that the organization is working very well and making good profit. Most of old employees either left the organization or retired and the organization is saved.

The question is whether ethics can be enforced. Definitely yes, provided the CEO is willing to build the organization such a way. The culture of the organization is developed by the Chief executive who believes in ethics and moral principles and standard in his life as well as a 'Value'.

Dr. K. Hariharan

Dear Sir, I think that ethics can be enforced by the other stakeholders

There is also the need to have strong law enforcement and the fear of
stringent punishments for willful offenders.
