I would like to contribute on this discussion

Does an individual resort to unethical practices because the culture of his organisation encourages him/her to carry on?

Sometimes the individual has to weigh their own beliefs and moral standing in the environment they work in. Do they fit in or fit out. It is also a matter of personal choice. If the individual feels that work cultures are affecting their moral standing they should get out of that environment.

1. Can ethics be enforced?

Yes, most organisations are successfully implementing ethics codes and policies. I even know of a bank that screens its clients for ethical standing before listing them as clients. In addition many Universities are implementing ethics policies in research as well as in methods of teaching and learning.

Ethics (or Code of Conduct) and Human values are the two sides of human behaviour. Like two sides of a coin, head and tail, ethics cannot be compared with human values. They mould the Human coin! Human values like honesty, integrity, love, respect, etc., are innate qualities gifted by nature to all human beings. Does not a dacoit love his wife or kids or mother? Human values are like undercurrent water of a sea, whereas ethics form the upper layer of water of the sea flowing over the under current water. Upper layer of water is affected by both the undercurrent and surrounding environment. Thus ethics are relative, path/profession dependent. For example, one of the ethics for a thief not steal from the house of other thief or a medial doctor will not charge fees for another practitioner. Work culture also plays a significant role to imbibe certain ethics.

Both human values and ethics do affect the abstract thought process of man. Habit is a gross part of human behaviour, an outcome of a thought process. Habits lead to (permanent) body material behaviour in a particular manner, can be termed as a trait. Society is made of man. Society is a blending of what is called good or bad. Good and bad co-exist and society survives because of these two. Probability of 100% good society or 100% bad is almost zero. The degree of good and bad, however, may change depending on the traits inculcated by society. The traits are further affected by the profession one adopts. Are not the traits of a teacher different from CEO or a bureaucrat or a thief?

Though ethics is an in-built part of work-culture, a new entrant learns on his own many things from it, ethics sometimes needs enforcement with a goal in mind. Those who cannot align with it have to face consequences like adjust (change traits and habits), remain passive. quit or be submissive. .

They were inculcated in us through many stories and examples, through practicing human values, through advising from time to time and it took a substantial part of their and our lives.

Absolutely ethics can be enforced.

In the context of the nomenclature of the term "ethics", it means "habit or custom". Human beings as animals by birth, are trained for good habits, good thoughts and good actions. This very process is known as socialization.

Then what does ethics mean? It simply means bringing in good habits and customs. So, there is no doubt. Ethics are to be enforced.

Ethics in short are the do's and dont's. They are not right and wrong. They are just do-ables and nondo-ables, which means even a mafia gang will have its own ethics where they emphasis what is do and dont for them to practice their business. There is no right and wrong for them. But, that is their business ethics. So, the answer for the question whether ethics can be enforced is a big "yes".

If not, how did we get good habits and customs of our ancestors? How are children getting our good habits and customs as their way of life. The good habits and good customs are spread through good family and socialization systems, bad habits and bad customs are spread through bad family and socialization systems. That is the difference. So, according to me, the very concept of ethics is subjective and enforceable.

Im tempted to join debate specially because teaching ethics in B-Schools is getting wider importance. I dont think ethics -voluntary moral actions or conscience, can be taught in B-School. Giving lectures or prodding wont change pupil's moral self, which is developed primarily at much younger age, shaped by parents. There is also research evidence that stories also fail to bring about 'inner' changes which must be brought about for acting ethically. Sad, but burden of inculcating ethical values lies with Society at large (Collective Conscience) and mostly with parents. Later in life, fear alone could enforce ethical (or for that matter ANY type) behaviour, with consequence that individual will revert to his mode of behaviour , the moment fear fails to exist
