--Rajasthan has become the first state to close any of its university in the country. Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Law University formed by the Gehlot government in 2013 was declared closed on November 25 citing feasibility issues.
A reply by the University Grants Commission (UGC) on November 21, says that documents available with UGC states that no university governed by central government, state government or state funded varsity were ever closed making this university first to be closed in the country.
Experts termed government move as 'lack of vision' by stating that they had overlooked the demand for law professionals which is almost parallel to the MBA grads.
"In the light of this reply, the closure reflects BJP's political vindictiveness for congress. hey have done what is not done before," said Rajiv Gupta, former head of department, Sociology and RI activist, who further added that closure at a time when country is struggling to match the gross enrollment ratio with China, Brazil and Indonesia. The closed university had a Vice Chancellor, registrar and a makeshift campus.
However, it was never allowed to admit students. Professor Yashpal Committee in 2009 recommended up-gradation of 1500 colleges into universities to transform higher education scenario in the country.
This is not the only state university facing closure but two others -- Haridev Joshi University of Journalism and Mass Communication (HJUJ) and Bikaner echnical University (BU) in Bikaner were recommended by the Cabinet Sub-Committee. This committee was formed to review the decisions taken by former CM Ashok Gehlot in last months of his tenure, ToI reported.
