[MTC Global] SC allows PGDM admissions by extending stay on notification for 2016-18

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday extended a stay on a December 2010 notification regarding the extent of the powers of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) over business schools for the academic year 2016-18.

This will allow around 300 business schools to proceed with the admissions process.

These business schools, which offer postgraduate diploma in management (PGDM), challenged the role of the AICTE in the admission process.

A bench headed by justice M.Y. Eqbal extended the stay, which was first granted in 2011. The court had allowed admissions batches of 2011-13, 2012-14, 2013-15, 2014-16 and 2015-17 through several judgments.

Mint reported on 2 December that these schools would approach the Supreme Court for a stay.

The question related to the powers of AICTE is pending to be heard by a bench of three judges of the apex court.

The notification gives AICTE power to intervene in matters of the admission process, curriculum and administration, taking away the autonomy of schools offering PGDM courses.
