[MTC Global] UGC sends reminder to varsities about women's safety

T
he University Grants Commission (UGC) has reminded all varsities under its jurisdiction to implement measures for the security of women on their campuses, as mentioned in the Saksham report. In a letter dated November 6, UGC chairman Ved Prakash has told all university vice-chancellors to strictly implement the guidelines. On September 1, UGC secretary Jaspal Sindhu has also issued a similar reminder.

The chairman's letter states, "Of late, some unfortunate incidents which do not conform with the spirit of measures suggested have come to the UGC's notice. Such instances de-accelerate the very purpose of the mission and discourage women students from pursuing studies. This is against the spirit of the government's Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign."

Prakash's letter has asked authorities to keep the UGC informed about the steps initiated. He has told them to constitute committees and separate cells to deal with gender-based violence and gender sensitisation programmes.

In 2013, the UGC had set up a task force to find out the shortcomings in women security across campuses and had published a report on the findings.

The report states that all higher education institutions should expeditiously undertake measures like developing a website for lodging complaints of sexual harassment, holding regular conferences, seminars, workshops and classes for self-defence of girls, and conduct research and studies, after informing the UGC.
