I would like to quote an example that may give you some idea. A relative of mine an IAS officer (now retired) was posted as Secretary State Public Service Commission for a continuous period of nine years. He remained scrupulous throughout his service and is known for his incorruptible nature is quoted as an example across the cadre. His formula – He will always request the chief minister to post him where he will have to confront his higher authorities or ministers against their unjust demand, he could deal effectively with corrupt juniors and the public. Still such situation did arise once in a while and his formula was very simple he would ask the authority to give the instructions in writing and no authority in their sensible mind would take such a risk.

This is absolutely no dilemma. It is very clear what to do in such situation.

Normally, bosses will not ask openly to do something illegal or unethical for personal benefits. However, if such situation arises, the personality of the subordinate will determine the degree of dilemma. A weaker personality will succumb to the pressure and crib, while as strong personality will have no  difficulty to  say, "No sir, you can not expect me to do that." He will also be ready  to face the consequences - confrontation, harassment, victimisation, etc.  and can consciously  decide to fight or flight.

However, in many situations in India, you have to do certain things, which normally are illegal and unethical but very commonly done by people  in organisational interest, whether you like it is not. For example, making periodic payments of cash, gifts , etc. to regulatory authorities  of government and bribing authorities in cases of procedural lapses, accidents, nonconformities, etc. are very common duties of certain functionaries in commercial / industrial organisations.

However, one can consciously choose the profession and assignment, where you can avoid such functions, if you so  want, but then should also be ready to accept its consequences as well, like may be  slower  growth of career  and lower pay and perks in life.

In my over three decade long career in academic and  Industry - PSU, MNC and Private, have never faced any such dilemma,  for I was very clear from the beginning , as to what I should do in such circumstances, if ever faced.
