Sometimes, it seems we live in uncivilized world. Last year, two women were sentenced to rape in India and the news went viral on the internet. Now the whole world is buzzing about Eritrean government who seems to be living in medieval time. While some countries are trying to abolish polygamy, Eritrean men have been reportedly asked by their government to marry more than one wife or risk being jailed for life.Polygamous family in AfricaThose who love polygamous lifestyle but live in countries where polygamy is an offence may be thinking of going to settle in Eritrea.According to the government, the order is because there is an acute shortage of men due to the civil war they fought with Ethiopia. Eritrea was annexed by Ethiopia in 1953. The document which was issued by the government reads:"Based on the law of God in polygamy, and given the circumstances which the country is experiencing in terms of men shortage, the Eritrean department of Religious Affairs has decided on the following:"First that every man shall marry at least two women and the man who refuses to do so shall be subjected to life imprisonment with hard labour."The woman who tries to prevent her husband from marrying another wife shall be punished to life imprisonment."RELATED ARTICLE: The largest family in the worldEritrea is a multi-ethnic country, with nine recognized ethnic groups in its population of around six million.Eritrean men asked to marry two wives or be jailedEritrean women are said to be very beautiful and they hearken a lot to their men counterparts largely because most of them depend on the men for their livelihood. Therefore it also assured them that it would pay for their marriage ceremonies as well as accommodation.In most African countries, polygamy is not an offence, provided one has the money to cater for the women. Some African countries such as Kenya even legalized polygamy.However, some people take advantage of this, misuse the opportunity and end up marrying lots of women who they can hardly take care of.In Nigeria for instance, Alhaji Abubakar Bello Masaba, who married 86 wives and has over 186 children became the head of the largest family in the world.__._,_.___
