Mr. Awaah,While I agree totally with your prescriptions on how to solve this imposition of French Language in the courts of the NorthWest Region, I would disagree with your last statement which states : "Also, remember that this is about the lawyers, not the Southern Cameroons' cause." Contrary to your suggestion, I would say it is a Southern Cameroon's cause after all, the raison d'etre of the Southern Cameroons struggle is to resist this kind of colonialization. When a stronger power imposes a "foreign" language on an indigenous people, we call it colonialism. When a foreign power fills positions of responsibility in the administrative and judicial branches with people who speak only the language of the foreign power or cannot speak the language of the indigens, we call that colonialism. When a people are forced to plead for their defense in a court of law in their own land in a language that is alien to them, that is called colonialism. What would be the reaction of the President or Minister of Justice if some anglophone judges in Douala or Garoua imposed some kind of "edict" that all pleadings in their courts must be in English because they do not understand French? If these Francophone Judges in Bamenda cannot understand English language, how would they understand our English Common law and English jurisprudence? The last time I check, Cameroon was still legally a bi-jural country. What has happened in Bamenda is the beginning of colonization pure and simple. It must be resisted.
The authorities in Cameroon are deluding themselves that anglophones are a docile "toothless" people who would accept everything that is thrown at them. Throughout history, every oppressed people have risen up and overthrown their oppressors and often in a lethal, violent manner. The irony is that while the president is sending his children to study in English-speaking countries, he is encouraging the suppression of English language in anglophone courts. If this is not schizophrenia then I don't know what it is. My advise is that the President of the Republic should uphold the constitution and safeguard the bi-cultural and bi-jural character of the country. The blatant superimposition of one culture over the other would surely result in violence and instability. It is this kind of impunity that has caused some countries to blow up in flames.Tabong Kima

Past history has shown that every time complaints are made by "Anglophones", the government ignores the complaints, followed by capitulation by the complainants. Over time, this has led the administration to conclude that "Anglophones" are "toothless dogs" that bark, but cannot bite. This time, the lawyers could break the administration's sense of invincibility and impunity by staging actions that would have an immediate impact. They have made their case in writing to all appropriate authorities. Perhaps the following actions among others may cause the government to pay attention:· Defy the ban and continue to make submissions in the courts in the English language· Boycott or refuse to appear in court and encourage their clients to flood the courts and demand representation· Give a press conference, then take to the streets and ask the population to join them in a general protest in support of their cause. The lawyers have a template to use - the GCE Board protest- that initially succeeded. If the lawyers can garner sympathy, support and involvement by the various parties that were involved in the GCE board protest, they may succeed. It all depends on whether majority of the lawyers would be ready and willing to sacrifice, and participate in the actions. Judging by the number of them involved so far, there is hope. But, who knows what will happen when the going gets tough? By the way, no violence is called for here. Also, remember that this is about the lawyers, not the Southern Cameroons' cause.Awaah
