Subject: [MTC Global] UGC asks varsities to start curriculum on anti corruption
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has written to the Vice Chancellors of universities across the country, advising them to take steps to include topics related to anti-corruption as part of the curriculum.
In a letter to VCs, UGC secretary, Jaspal S Sandhu said that children are keen to learn about ethics and how to fight corruption, and expanding their knowledge base will encourage them to tackle corruption and also aid character building.
Directions by the higher education regulator come after the Central Vigilance Commission's advice that chapters on topics such as ethics, vigilance and details of agencies such as CVC and CBI who deal with anti-corruption cases should be included in the curriculum of all courses. The move aims to enhance awareness among students about corruption, its adverse impact on society and to explain how to file a complaint regarding corrupt practices.
The letter also mentioned that CVC which observes Vigilance Awareness Week every year noted that in the week observed in October 26-31, 2015, UGC's outreach activities towards creating vigilance awareness had focused on reaching out to students in schools and college across the country. However, a general lack of awareness among school and college students about corruption and its impact on society was seen.
The teaching fraternity has welcomed the move. Aabshar Abbasi, assistant professor at Doon University, said, "It is definitely a good move by UGC and varsities must certainly introduce anti-corruption in their curriculum as the youngsters need to be aware about ways to deal with increasing corruption in society. In fact, under media studies, we already are teaching our students about ethics and laws to combat corrupt practices," reported ToI.
