Job Description:
Under the oversight of the Director of Service Delivery and Network Operations, with broad scope for the exercise of independent initiative and judgment, the Router/Switch Field Engineer is responsible for evaluating, implementing, testing, and documenting of all projects, as well as performing problem isolation and resolution, optimization, and propagation of standards for maintaining a complex range of computer network components and systems. He or she as a team member of Service Delivery and Network Support will provide remote site support for administrative and instructional arms of the DOE network.  He/she will interface with various support groups, both internal external to Division of Instructional & Information Technology (DIIT), DoE partners, and vendors to oversee that compliance and direction are maintained within the DoE enterprise network.

 

Reports to:  
Manager of Network Support

 

Key Relationships:
Interfaces with WAN support, LAN support, Network Integrators, DOE network engineers, Project Connect network engineers and other support teams to oversee that compliance and directions are maintained with the placement of network hardware and all associated platforms and components connecting to all network hardware.

 

Responsibilities:

·                     Primarily provide remote site support for the integration of network equipment via circuit provisioning and testing.  Duties will also include the following:

·                     Design and implementation of complex network projects to address and resolve business needs of DOE. 

·                     Perform network modification projects in relation to DoE Wide Area Network (WAN), DoE enterprise data centers that include routing protocol configuration changes, router/switch configuration, and firewall/VPN configuration.

·                     Meet with and collect data from various departments and agencies in the creation of practical network modifications for design, development, testing and eventual implementation in the production environment.

·                     Create change requests for configuration changes on routers, switches and firewalls etc.

·                     Performs day-to-day network administration tasks including network equipment maintenance, application and network troubleshooting utilizing packet traces.

·                     Utilizes monitoring, performance analysis, network management, software and hardware equipment to troubleshoot and isolate problems, gauge network performance, and trace data and protocol activity.

·                     Provides periodic network inventory reports, bandwidth utilization and security status reporting.

·                     Prepare network diagrams, floor plans and schematics using Microsoft Visio.

·                     Supports and maintains DoE optical backbone comprising DWDM and Synchronous Optical Networking (SONET) environment.

·                     Responds evenings and weekends to emergency calls regarding critical network outages.

 

Certification Requirements:
Experience and Skillsets:

·                     Deep understanding in networking technologies related to all layers of the TCP/IP stack.

·                     Strong experience in routing and switching protocols such as BGP, EIGRP, OSPF, RIP, STP, Etherchannel and Trunking.

·                     Expertise and significant hands-on experience working with large LAN/WAN infrastructure and all LAN and WAN networking technologies.

·                     Hands-on experience and expertise with Cisco Catalyst Switches 6500, 4500, 3550; Cisco Routers 7500, 7200, 3845, 2900, 800.

·                     Excellent understanding of VPN and related protocols - site to site, client, IPSEC (including the protocol suite), IKE, tunnel modes, SSL clientless/ Anyconnect, Tunnels between ASAs, Routers.

·                     Experience with Local Load Balancers Cisco CSS/ACE/GSS, F5 BigIP LTM. 

·                     Experience in technical documentation including network drawings using Microsoft Visio.

·                     Excellent analytical and organizational skills and attention to detail.

·                     Excellent verbal and written communication skills in preparation of reports, presentations and documentation.

·                     Ability to verbally translate and articulate complex technical issues for the efficacy of non-technical users.

·                     Experience in the development of technology standards for Architecture, Design and Implementation.

 

Networking protocols and standards:

·                     CCNP certification

1.                   A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, and two years of satisfactory full-time (not classroom based) experience in wide area network planning, design, configuration, installation, troubleshooting, integration, performance monitoring, maintenance, enhancement, and security management; or

2.                   A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and six years of satisfactory full-time (not classroom based) information technology experience of which at least 2 years must have been as described in "1" above; or

A master's degree in computer science or a related field from an accredited college may substitute for one year of experience.  However, all candidates must have at least one year of satisfactory (not classroom based) full-time information technology experience as described in "1" above.
