Re: [MTC Global] Employability of a Graduate

Please mind well, as early as 1900 Century, Bharatratna, Sir, M Visvesvraraya has identified one of the objectives of education as worthy to be for a calling to support himself and one's family. Even in the Gurukul system employ-ability was considered as the natural by product of education. All involved in the process of education -MHRD to faculty- are accountable for quality education of which getting  job is one of the by-products. No special efforts are required to improve employ-ability, if every thing is in place.

Hence, there cannot be two opinions on

In this context, the quote of Dr. Eden Y Woon, Vice President for Institutional
Advancement at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology goes as:
"we are very firm in the belief that the university is not a vocational training institute. So the purpose of the university is not just to prepare you for jobs. The purpose of the university is really to give students a skill so that they can go and find a job but, more importantly, it is really to prepare students for what happens after they get a job. In other words, whether they can adapt to the job and adapt to changes that the world  requires of them. That is where innovation, creativity and attitude come  in."

Incidentally,   Principal,
G P Nagarkar, Govt. college of Engineering, Aurangabad, (1960-650  used to express publicly  the same or similar views as we do not impart degree for only jobs but more importantly to turn them into knowledgeable and good citizens of the country.

To me relating education to employ-ability is a very myopic view.

In the absence of any tangible value coming out from the Universities,
the default will prevail. The Universities have not shown any
competence in the areas of research or excellent teaching which would
reinforce learning outcomes.Hence the only measurable outcome or value
is employability, which is being enforced by the industry by default.
