[MTC Global] Now, international academics may teach at Indian universities

PUNE: The Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD) has initiated scholarship programmes in higher education to fund the entire course for deserving students in an effort to stop them from seeking options abroad.

Union minister Prakash Javadekar said during the 100th convocation ceremony of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) that the ministry has established the Global Research Interactive Network through which international faculty would be invited to teach in India and share best practices. The MHRD has targeted to invite 600 international faculty members under the programme.

The network was launched recently to attract the best foreign academics to Indian universities of excellence. During his address to students at the convocation, Javadekar said, "The programme has been launched to facilitate a partnership between higher education institutions in India and other foreign universities. Under the programme, about 350 courses are being offered by foreign faculty from 38 countries. The cost of travel and honorarium ranging from Rs20 lakh to Rs20 crore for research proposals is being met from the scheme funds. These courses are being looked at as a starting point for long-term research collaborations between Indian and other global institutions, and, therefore, signal a major chapter in the higher education system."

The Union minister added that the aim of introducing the scheme was to stop students from going out of India for higher studies and ensure that they get all resources within the country. Javadekar said that if students remain in India, the patents acquired by them will also remain in the country.

Further, according to the minister, 20 world universities would be set up in the coming years, including 10 private and 10 public universities that would offer world class academic infrastructure and courses.
