[MTC Global] Has the library outlived its usefulness in the age of Internet?

Dear All

Thanks for starting a discussion on all important subject viz. has the library outlived its utility and role in the age of Internet.
 
I agree that library usage as measured by users' football is relatively less. However, librarian has to play the active role in ensuring the end use of library and should satisfy all the stakeholders of the library.
 
Research on this subject has indicated that users prefer to read on Laptop/ Mobile, rather than sit and read in the library. 
 
Librarian should develop the Library Applications and provide all the library collections at one click.

1) Federated Search for all the online databases including digital repository of the institute and Books catalogue
2) Practical hands on orientation of all the online databases to all users.
3)Proactive library services
4) Library Services should be connected to Institute vision and mission and should be result oriented
5) Library services should be a catalytic agent in improving employability of students thus narrowing the gap between industry and education. 
6) Library practical workshop for Research Tools, Citations, Survey Software, plagiarism should be conducted periodically. 

Library usage depends on the library services and we can improve the usage by constantly studying the user analytics/ online user access data.
 
User Analytics data is useful for improving the library services as per the end-users need. 
 
I am sure if librarian seriously work on the challenges of higher education and solve them through library services automatically library usage will improve to deliver value to end users. The focus of library services should be to create value for end users keeping in mind the requirements of a knowledge society.
