Hi,
My take on the discussion.
PhD system in India is fundamentally flawed as it is 'process oriented' rather than 'outcome oriented'.
Any crap can be a basis for PhD if it is approved by 2-3 people from a 'closed' group.
This is probably why there is no India based professor in the FT45 list since past few decades.
This is why there is hardly any development of management thought from India.
PhDs are being poured in by universities because it is a 'mandatory requirement' to become a teacher.
Finally, there is no one but ourselves to blame for this PhD mess.
We need to ask ourselves two questions 'why did we do a PhD?' and 'why are we supervising PhDs?'.
Honest answers to these two questions would rest the discussion.
There is lot to discuss on this issue and I would be glad to share more thoughts on the same, offline.
Regards,
Moid

My take is:
- There are innumerable examples in Indian style of functioning where something (called innovating, creative, change, reformation, pragmatic, advanced countries suit, etc.,) is created mostly in self interests, no planning, no monitoring, no sustainability efforts, no continuous improvement, etc., and after a decade or so discard it as it has served the purpose of individual or a group of them.
- What is the cost/losses, huge and Ir-recoverable, of such experimentation to the nation or to the public?
- PhD qualification was considered essential more than two decades ago. Were the stalwarts then incompetent? Why did we so miserably fail to control the climate that to day we conclude that PhD is not necessary for quality teachers?
- Who is wrong? Where? How? Why?

Dear all,
There are some questions related to the above issue.
1). Is there any study that shows that insitution with maximum Ph.D faculties have delivered the best learning resources,, created inquisitiveness among students', addressed the needs of the students'.?
2). how many Ph.D's are acutlally application oriented for policy purpose or had they been used in practice by the various stake holders?
3). Whether the demonstration effect is playing a role in driving most of the faculties to Ph.D?
4). Do all teacher's have same degree of curiosity?
I agree that ideally doctorate is a degree that is suppose to widen the area of knowledge and deepen the understanding levels but I am sorry to say that most of the teachers see it as option to NET/SLET and getting it becomes do or die situation. I am not against the financial equations of increment attached to it.. But I feel that in process of registration for Ph.D , one needs to be eqully consciuos about the application and the impact that his research is likely to make on the society and mankind. Research done with such objectives is the need of the hour.
This is what I personally feel.
Thanks
