3 Ways Teachers Can Drastically Increase Student Attention Span

Student Attention

The world is a stage, and classroom certainly is one. Every teacher needs to make it one. An important pre-requisite for teachers is to make the young adults take notice of them. Whether it is through the grand entrance they make or the dress they wear, every aspect is important to garnering the attention. Students notice everything from footwear to hairstyle; to the colour of bangles, and pedicured feet. The first few minutes when a teacher enters the class, students don't hear anything the teacher has to say. They simply study them; their body language and their confidence. It is therefore imperative to make a strong entrance and make use of powerful entry lines.

Primarily, teachers should don the avatar of a theatre actor – step on the stage and enthral the audience. To hold their attention, teacher's needs to put up a convincing act and sell the student's their story. Whether it is a story on chemistry or mathematical formulae or economic activity, teachers need to portray the sense that whatever is being said is 100%  percent authentic. This, however, is just the easy bit. Holding student's attention is the more difficult part as students, today, are easily bored with standard and unexciting information.

Teachers should never start the teaching process the moment they enter the classroom. Instead, they should connect with the children by sharing some anecdotes or interesting stories loosely related to the chapter. For e.g. While teaching a topic on 'physical and chemical changes', teachers can fabricate a story on how they inoculated the milk to set curd. How are both the products different? What kind of changes takes place? And so on. Using stories allows a child to connect memories, or linking cognition to emotions, and thereby makes several complex concepts easy. Subsequently, as teachers proceed with explaining the chapter, they should create a mystery and generate curiosity. At all times, It is absolutely vital for teachers to make eye contact with the students and remember their name. If they feel any student is drifting, teachers can instinctively call them out and ask a simple question. This not only helps in connecting better with the student but also alerts the other students.

Another interesting teaching technique is flip-learning. In this scenario, the teacher introduces a topic to the students and sets a date for discussing it. Students are required to perform extensive research and have information about the topic before the actual class. The classes, wherever this technique is employed usually experiences an extremely high level of interaction, attentiveness and interest. Additionally, it also imbibes the value of self-learning in the minds of the young students.

Effective teaching techniques can perform wonders to attract student's attention span. For instance, while explaining any concept, instead of speaking about it verbally, showing students what the word actually means goes a long way in reinforcing the idea. Better, if students are encouraged to experiment in any concept, they will not only enjoy it but will never forget it as well. Also, there will be a renewed sense of focus to pay attention in the class, and even look forward to the next class.
