Re: [MTC Global] SKILL INDIA ~ Facts and Figures

Thank you Dr. P H Waghodekar. On a lighter note, I must say that in India when parents are looking to marry their sons, they look for girls with "Zero Defects." In addition, all other things that come from girl's family should also be 100% free (from defects).

As you mentioned, quality is the result of the mindset and it is reflected in all facets of a culture. Japan, Korea and in many countries including USA people largely believe that "quality of life" is derived from "quality of work." Producing quality products and services is hard work. The flip side of this coin is  that quality and work can also become an obsession.  I am sure Indian businesses are now being forced to take quality seriously. For quite sometime "Made in China" was a derogatory  expression but now some Chinese products are thriving in global markets. Make in India will require tremendous shift in the mindset of business leaders and workers in India.

Since last 7 decades, we have not paid attention to productivity or Process and Performance Management. Nor we have heard the defaulters- may be officer, faculty or institute- are taken to ride. we are developing a culture of freebees.

We believe more in short-cuts and soft strategies  than putting our heart to skill development. We allot roughly 50% time for practical and remaining for theory. Can you guess: how many engines, say, a Mechanical graduate dissembles and assembles in a  UG program of Mechanical Engineering, like one four wheeler engine, center lathe, turret, milling machine and say a boiler? More or less the same state of affairs is found in all prgs, e.g., how many first CSE students open a PC, electronics guy goes for soldering or civil boy carries out  contouring?

We have been spending crore of Rs on Skill India. What is the ROI? What are the benefits society could draw from such prgs?

Zero Defects must be our mind set. See the attachment.

Hello all MTC friends,

Observing the data as given by Dr.S.S Dey, an inference can be drawn that our education and training i.e. skill development is lop sided. Our next generation is learning blindly without caring what is required by the industry in our country.

Who will lead to guide them? I saw a picture about change. The person on the podium says: who wants change?
All sitting opposite the podium raised their hands. 100%, it is awesome said the person behind the podium.

Next he says: who will change?          All hands were down and heads were stooped of the people on the other side of the podium.

Last he said: who will lead the change?    By this time, none was on their seats to hear him.

In the same way, who will lead to fill this skill gap in the coming years so that the country may not suffer from productive skills.

More guidance, more career counselling, more interaction between Government, Government Departments and Industry required.

Valued views of worthy MTCians are welcome.

64% skill shortage in India means a very big number in crore, in absolute term. China has 24% skill shortage, though equally a large number but much much less than that of India.. A matter of intense worry indeed.
