Re: [MTC Global] [Weekend Big Discussion-II] What do you believe to be the biggest issue facing us today in public education that is resulting in many of our schools/colleges to be labeled as low performing?

Biggest Problem is parents mindset and their irresponsible character.

Biggest Problem is student - Teacher disconnect. Syllabus, Pedagogy & all other materials related to up-gradation of the student lose their value if a proper guide/motivator-cum-teacher is not accepted by students as their leader in real sense. The age old student-pupil relation is somehow missing. Classes are becoming crowded and admission season becomes a nightmare for parents and despite training the child in the basic interview ( identifying colors, shapes, different public figures) the bonding which is very much necessary between the children and the teacher has somehow been lost and the reason could well be...
1.) Teaching is just another job....routine, robotic, mechanical...passion is missing. Though teaching job still commands a respectful and dignified place of honor in the society - the joy of profession would double if it comes from the heart.
2.) Children - the present day new generation are too smart...the exposure to television & mobile at a very young age has robbed the children of the joy of reading.....gone are the zeal and enthusiasm of sharing of "Comic Books". During our growing up years we used to raid the Library quite often for : Enid Blyton ( Secret Seven/ 5 Find outers ), Agatha Christie, Hardy Boys...and many other treasures. Vacations were a time for exchanging binded comic books of Tarzan, Phantom, Mandrake, Bahadur, Korak...etc... Unfortunately the youngsters these days don't have time for them.

If a change has to be brought in the education sector at the school level....we need to go back in time to the grass root. We experimented with Comprehensive Grading instead of Rankings....it was a big blunder and an utter failure and we are again back to the old system of rankings now. Ups and Downs are a part and parcel of Life...let us not burden the children with our Great expectations...pushing them into celebrity shows....making them compete and leaving them broken hearted...just for entertainment? Rather than giving children space...one should learn to give them more time....teach them in the real sense of teaching and not just to pass exams....Let us teach them to learn and understand which at the tender age is very receptive.

Stephen
