[MTC Global] 22 colleges in T.N. to be shut

The All India Council for Technical Education has approved the closure of 22 colleges, including four engineering and three polytechnics in the State, its chairman Anil D. Sahasrabudhe said here on Saturday.

He was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a conference on 'Creating competent engineers for a new India', organised by the Consortium of Self-Financing Professional, Arts and Science Colleges.

Prof. Sahasrabudhe said the colleges were not among those that had been found to be deficient during a surprise check.

In Tamil Nadu, 41 institutions had been chosen for surprise inspection. Twenty two institutions, including engineering, polytechnic, pharmacy and management colleges, had sought closure. Four engineering colleges, including a women's college in the State and one in Puducherry, had been closed, while three polytechnics, including the government-run MGR Film Institute's three-year diploma programme and 14 institutions offering MBA/MCA programmes, had been shut, AICTE officials said. This year, the intake of students in engineering is expected to be at least 25,000 less than that of last year. "Last year, it was 2.75 lakh, but this year it would be 2.50 lakh," said a council member.

New institutions

The AICTE had given approval for three new engineering colleges — a college each on Prist University's Madurai and Chennai campuses and Amritha Viswa Vidhyapeetam's engineering college, which would be affiliated to Anna University. Amritha Viswa Vidyapeetam's college would function from Chennai. The college was approved last year with an intake of 300.

The State would have two management colleges, one each in Coimbatore and Chennai and eight new colleges of pharmacy
