RE: [MTC Global] Time For B-Schools To Look Beyond Corporate Interests, Help Govt

I feel that MBA institutes flourished during 80s because humanities and commerce programs in higher education failed to upgrade themselves as per need of the day . Though offering career opportunities was responsibility of these colleges, student completing their graduation were unable to find entry in the commerce and industry sector. However, Some of high ranking  humanities and commerce programs across the country have been attracting  top of the line students. MBA has also lost its credentials (except top notch institutions) because one cannot rate the competency of a person based on the testimonials (degree) in his hand. The crisis can be handled only when the poor performing institutions and poor faculty members go out of the system.

We need to note:

  1. Private professional institutes started all over India with AICTE approval or so in mid-80s.
  2. The argument then was put up under market forces these institutes would not survive more than a decade that has not happened. On the other hand the expansion proved explosive since then.
  3. The major reasons are: (1) High population of students available in India. (2) The cost of education affordable even to lower middle class people.(3) the so called charity of education turned into a commercial (profiteering) activity. (4) All stakeholders are benefited in way or the other at the cost of quality education and unemployment (5) Bureaucracy, Public and stalwarts complimenting each other.
  4. Though employment rate is hardly in the range 7-15 %, one may agree or not, the common people started aspiring some employment may be at subsidized compensation that appear to be much above the average market wages, e.g., if an MBA or BE gets Rs say 8000-12000 pm, the average market wages fall in the range Rs 4000 to 6000 pm with no security.
  5. In such a scenario, FW Taylor, Elton Mayo, Gilbreth, Adam Smith, Mundel, Barnes, etc., have no role to play as our mission is to keep the nose above water (under Indian conditions not Global) and we are by nature complacent with what we get !
  6. And B-schools is a part and parcel of our democratic system.

Aptly summarised by Prof.Ramesh Vemuganti....Many groups and trusts started B Schools and Management Institutes in commercial interests only but not to enhance the skills of the students...

Now that market is in the corrective mode and institution which withstand  the market challenges are here to survive and grow...So much of literature and useful concepts are available thanksto many pioneers like F.W.Taylor, Henry Fayol, Elton Mayo, Jerome McCarthy, Peter Cricket, Philip Kotler, Abraham Maslow, C.K.Prahlad, T.V.Rao and the list goes on and on....

If we should come close to the ranks of Wharton, Stanford,Harvard, Insead, Melbourne School, Oxford, Cambridge, it's a long way and the path has to be charged out well and in next 10 years , we can challenge them with our competence...

My take is:

  1. In all institutes including universities, neither process management nor performance management is done.
  2. Passionate teacher is rare species. Accountable and dutiful teachers are competent enough to face the challenges.
  3. Better to talk less about compensation for ours is a country where the Institutes of National Importance are hiring faculty on consolidated salary pm, say, AP Rs 40000 pm for one/two semesters.
  4. We know there is not a single Indian Institute in the first 100 World Top Universities during the last 7 decades  indicating that neither our faculty nor our education system is ready to take responsibility of carrying out the transition to new system to make it global. In fact, it is not seen to be necessary!

Dear all,

I would like to repeat saying that, there is no differentiation made between good, bad and average performer especially in this sector and hardly we find few passionate teachers.

So passion, plan and perseverance makes fabulous teachers. I guess 360 degree performance appraisal suits the need and even human resource accounting too. Survival of the fittest - I mean those who really work passionately and bring results are to be empowered and even package must be purely on the basis of performance.

There must be high level of healthy and progressive competition in teaching and it has to be strictly followed.

Selection criteria includes more of documents and degrees and why not excellence and passion with that?

Many business schools have come up and students are segregated much, they hire people with less salary to reduce cost and they don't bother what those teachers make? Are they making assets of nation or liabilities?

We must have a serious discussion on this and final decisions must be implemented soon to maintain the dignity of management education.

Regards,

Prof.Syed Ameen
